  1. SEO Meta Tags- All You Wanted To Know About It SEO Meta Tags- All You Wanted To Know About It Meta Tags are an effective way for webmasters to provide information about their site to the search engines. A meta tag is not fully visible while the reader is surfing through the website. It appears on the SERP. They are a means of explaining everything in a site, in a summarized fashion to the search engines. They appear in the head section of the HTML code. <head>Meta tags appear here</head> Meta Tags and SEO Today- Meta Tags and SEO Today- Meta tags played a crucial role in improving the search results of a site before people started abusing them to get on top of SERPs. Today, high quality, informative and relevant content, plays a far superior role in a site’s SEO rankings than meta tags. Google reduced the power of meta tags for your site’s rankings, but that

  2. doesn’t mean meta tags have no role to play today. It is still an important part of your website. If you want to see whether any site is using meta tags, just right click on any part of the site and click “View Page Source.” Elements of Meta tags which are relevant today- Elements of Meta tags which are relevant today- Meta tags have many elements to it but all of them do not constitute for the good meta tags. The Meta Keywords attribute for example, which allowed marketers to stuff their code with keywords to amp up their rankings is blacklisted today by Google. There are several meta tags that are there which can be used by a marketer, but it is advisable to only use a few which are relevant. Here I have discussed some of the most-used ones. If you want to know about all the meta tags out there this is a comprehensive meta tag resource that you can use for your reference. Title Tag- Title Tag- The Title Tag is that part of the HTML code which holds the title of the web page. Title Tags are displayed on the search engine results pages as a clickable heading. They are relevant for SEO, social sharing and usability. Each title tag should hold an accurate and concise description of the content displayed on the page. In the code they appear as <head> <title>Example Title</title> </head> Google mostly displays 50-60 characters of the title tag. If you, keep your title tags under 60 characters, chances of them appearing correctly increase by 90%. Ways to write a good Title Tag- Ways to write a good Title Tag- Title Tags are important elements of SEO and User Experience. Thus, it is very important to write effective and water tight tags for each of your web pages. These are certain guidelines that I believe will help in writing great title tags for your web pages.  Try to keep the title tags within the 60 character or 600-pixel limit to avoid Google from cutting off chunks of your tag.  Try to avoid ALL CAPS for your title tag and write it in sentence case  Do not stuff your title tag with keywords, and avoid repetition.

  3.  Try to construct unique data-driven titles for each of your web pages.  Use the more relevant keywords in the beginning of your title tag.  If you have a well-known brand, try adding the brand name to your titles for the HOME page and ABOUT page.  Tailor your title tags for your audience and not only for the search engines. Make them more click able. Meta Description- Meta Description- Another important element of meta tags is the meta description. These are the concise description or summary of the web pages that appear below the clickable links in the search results. Meta descriptions can be of any length, but it is best to keep it within 160 characters else Google will truncate the rest. The code sample for a meta description is <head> <meta name=“description” content=“This is your meta description that will show up in SERPs.”> </head> Meta description is not linked directly to search rankings, but marketers marketers can use this as an excellent free advertising snippet, to attract readers to the content displayed on the webpage. Often even amongst the searches that appear on the first page of Google, we tend to click on that link, that has a very interesting and relevant description. While it should be an aim for every marketer to have his website on the first page, whether it is first or third really doesn’t matter to the reader. Meta description, thus, plays an important role in packaging the content beautifully to the audience. Think of it as an attractive gift wrap for your content and use it intelligently. Heads up: Google may not always use your exact meta description. Don’t get discouraged, use your creativity and writing skills to create a compelling ad copy for each page. Meta Robots- Meta Robots- You use this attribute of meta tags to tell the search engines how to crawl, index and present your web pages in the search results. Meta Robots are not visible to the readers. Let us discuss the main robot meta tag attributes that are supported by

  4. Google, Bing and Yahoo!.  Index & no-index: The default value is index. noindex disallows a search engine to index the particular page that has that instruction.  Follow & nofollow: Default value is follow. The nofollow tells the robots not to crawl any links on that webpage.  None: It is the shorthand for nofollow and noindex.  Noarchive: The noarchive feature commands the search engines not to store the cached copy of that particular web page.  Nosnippet: The nosnippet attribute instructs the search engines to not display the Meta Description in the SERPs.  Noodp: noodp restricts search engines from generating automatic Meta Descriptions from the Open Directory Project. Open Directory Project is, however, closing as of March 14, 2017.  Nocache: It is identical as the noarchive attribute, but is only utilised by the search engine MSN/Live. The code sample of a meta robots tag is <meta name=“robots” content=“index, follow”> Canonical Meta Tag- Canonical Meta Tag- Search engines may penalise you if multiple URLs point out to the same content or similar content. The Canonical Meta Tag tells search engines which pages to index, and which to avoid if such a situation occurs. These help your web pages to get higher ranks as search engines do not inflict a penalty on you, thinking you have duplicate content. A sample code of a canonical tag is <link rel=”canonical” href=”http://example.com/” /> To sum up, we have a world of meta tags many of which have become obsolete. Even the ones which remain don’t necessarily play the most important role in search rankings. However, they shouldn’t be ignored as they are important in presenting your website attractively to your audience. Remember to use them wisely and avoid spamming your code in any fashion.
