  1. The Impact of COVID-19 in the Delivery Business COVID-19 has shown how our interconnected world with all its technological advancements can be brought to a standstill. The pandemic is raging on with the second wave afflicting people across the world and impacting economies in its wake. Every sector worth its name such as hospitality, transport, logistics, airlines, entertainment, and manufacturing, among others has been hit hard. However, notwithstanding the gloomy scenario, the online delivery business has done remarkably well during the pandemic. As the situation forced people to stay indoors and maintain social distancing, the online delivery business has been lapped up by people who found it extremely safe, convenient, and accessible. In fact, the rush for online purchases is so high that many popular online grocery delivery stores in India like Amazon, BigBasket, and Grofers are forced to reschedule their delivery dates. And the scene is no different elsewhere in the world with Walmart Grocery, Instacart, or Shipt clocking massive sales volumes and witnessing an increase in downloads by 218%, 160%, and 124% respectively (Source: TechCrunch). Also, the unprecedented situation has seen an increase in online sales to the tune of 52% and customer count by 8.8% when compared to the previous year (Source: Supermarket News). Let us understand how the online delivery business associated with a few sectors has grown during the pandemic.

  2. # Grocery Delivery With the onset of the pandemic and the clamping of lockdown around the world, the online delivery of groceries has seen an upswing. In fact, during the last few months, the download of grocery delivery apps has been massive. If in the USA and China, apps like Instacart, Shipt, Carrefour, and Walmart Grocery, among others, saw a massive number of downloads, then BigBasket, Grofers, and others in India counted their stars for the increase in sales. To cite an example, the Walmart Grocery app witnessed more than 54K downloads on March 15 alone compared to a daily figure of 20K earlier. Moreover, the surge in business has seen many retail businesses dealing in groceries reaching out to mobile app development services to take their business online. # Food Delivery Services With customary visits to hotels or restaurants coming to a close during the lockdown, people took to online food delivery services to order food and beverages. No wonder, popular apps like Zomato, Uber Eats, Swiggy, Foodpanda, Dominos, etc., have seen a rise in their number of customers. Thanks to these apps and growing customer preferences for them, many food outlets and restaurants were able to sustain and even make profits when actual footfalls to their places were reduced to zero. Even with the lifting of lockdown, people working remotely from their homes and preferring to avoid crowded places, are using online food delivery services to satisfy their taste buds. The demand for such apps has driven more number of businesses to build their apps or join such food delivery app platforms. Read our blog to find out the things to be considered while building a food delivery app. # General Delivery In the pre-COVID age, food and grocery delivery were quite common. General delivery service has rapidly gained pace in the post-pandemic days. Such service providers allow you to purchase anything from your preferable (or their listed) stores and share the details with them. They will collect the item and deliver at your address. You can also seek their assistance to send handmade items, documents, or gifts to someone. The best part is that such service providers allow you to get your grocery, medicines or any other item from your preferred local store. Swiggy Genie and Uber Connect are two popular examples of such delivery services. On the other hand, Swiggy Grocery Store and Zomato Market allow you to purchase grocery items from the listed shops in the apps. Many new businesses (such as 24Hourz, instaGin, etc.) are also emerging following the similar model.

  3. Conclusion The impact of COVID-19 has made ‘going digital’ the new normal with the online delivery services being the major beneficiaries. With most sectors slowly limping back to normalcy as lockdown restrictions are eased, the online delivery services continue to show an upward trend. In fact, going forward, these services should find out better ways to meet the sudden surge in demand and keep their customers happy.
