  2. Preoccupied with Joy@Work? Ecclesiastes 5:18-20 “Then I realized that is good and proper for a man to eat and drink, and to find satisfaction in his toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of life God has given him—for this is his lot. Moreover, when God gives a man wealth and possessions, and enables him to enjoy them, to accept his lot and be happy in his work—this is a gift of God. He seldom reflects on the days of his life, because God keeps him occupied with gladness of heart.”

  3. Finding Joy at Work • Genesis account – God found joy in both the process and result of Creation • Jesus reminds us of God’s enjoyment of work in Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-29) • Typical focus: use our talents to do something to bless the world • Reinforces the importance of work to God • Steward resources with goal of creating products and services to bless others; given authority to DECIDE • So important that Christians should want to be held accountable to how well they steward their work • Source of real JOY > for the Master & servants

  4. Redeeming Our Work • Pre-Fall working environment was paradise • Work > central element of paradise (not reverse) • Act of worship • Fulfilling and rewarding • Post-Fall, all of life, including work, became troublesome and difficult • Curse: Work = mundane, obligatory, burdensome, drudgery • Any hope of recovering work as a joyous experience? • Christ REDEEMED all things, including work • No perfect work environments, but can be re-created • Must be humble if we are to experience Joy@Work

  5. Leadership That Elicits Joy@Work • Work is less enjoyable if bosses make most of the important decisions • Creation story doesn’t assign anyone to ‘manage’ other people (animals & plants) > stewards for the world, not dominate other people • Biblical leadership = those in authority must SERVE those they lead • Allow followers to use their talents effectively • Good leaders delegate decisions and create an environment in which others can manage God’s world • Master entrusted servants to decide about investing

  6. Increasing Everybody’s Joy@Work • Start seeing the intrinsic VALUE of every person • Foster greater fellowship and FRIENDSHIPS • FINE-TUNE everyone’s jobs, starting with yours • Accurate position descriptions • Insight into each person’s work temperament (Personal Preference Inventory / PPI) • Agreement on expectations of the job-holder and the supervisor (Job Preference Inventory / JPI) • Provide ACCOUNTABILITY at church for how everyone is using the authority from God to manage God’s resources, find meaning, and have more fun!

  7. Make Meetings More Exciting • Death by Meeting: A Leadership Fable about Solving the Most Painful Problem in Business by Patrick M. Lencioni • Most dread meetings but love movies • Meetings and movies tend to be about two hours long • Meetings should be much more relevant and engaging than movies • Can’t change anything in a movie if you don’t like it • Should be able to affect agenda and outcome of meetings • Movies, however good, won’t impact your life • Meetings, however, have the potential to lighten your load and improve your prospects of finding Joy@Work

  8. Overcoming Death by Meetings Learn from movie directors: bring out the ‘drama’ of important issues Different meetings, different formats Daily Headline news: 10 minute check-ins Weekly TV show: 1 hour tactical discussions Full-length movie: 2 hour strategic discussions Miniseries: Quarterly retreat for team-building

  9. Lest We Forget Our 2nd Sacred Vocation “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” --Jesus
