  2. Abraham Adrian Albert background information • Born: 9 Nov. 1905, Chicago, Illinois, USA. • Died: 6 June 1972, Chicago, Illinois, USA. • Both parents immigrated to USA for business. • 2nd child of the family. • Spent most of his life in Chicago. • Studied at University of Chicago. • Got doctorate in 1928 for “Algebras and their Radicals and Division Algebras”. • Married Freda Davis on 1927. • Taught at University of Chicago since 1931.

  3. Ruth Aaronson Bari’s background information • Born: 17 Nov. 1917 • Died: 25 Aug. 2005 (Alzheimer disease) • Parents are Polish and Jewish. • Grew up in Brooklyn, New York. • Went to Brooklyn College. • Got a near perfect score in a very tough test in High School. • Earned Bachelor’s Degree in Math in 1939. • Married Arthur Bari. • Taught at a university for 22 years.

  4. Compare and Contrast • Abraham Albert is famous for his work on Riemann Matrices. • Ruth Bari is known for her work on graph theory and homomorphisms. • Both have Master’s Degree and doctorates. • Abraham Albert helped research for another mathematician L. E. Dickson, and Ruth Bari taught a mathematician William Tutte for 2 weeks. • Albert won an award for his work, but Bari didn’t get any prizes. • Bari was a professor longer than Albert at the universities.

  5. Influences to their contributions • Ruth Bari’s university suggested women should give up their learning so men from the World War II could continue studying, so her doctorate was delayed. • L. E. Dickson made a big impact on Abraham Albert research for his later life.

  6. Who has the bigger contribution • I think Abraham Albert has a bigger contribution. • He won a prize. • Published books. • Albert made decisions for many different departments including the National Science Foundation and gave loads of math opportunities for young people that were not there before. • Participated in the World War 2 and helped deal with army problems.
