  1. CSUMBSchool of iTCD (BS) Spring 2010 Capstone Progress Report:~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Non-narrative abstract animation: 21st Century Art + Technology in Motion~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ By Mariko Nihonyanagi Advisor: Pat Watson For: ~~~~~~~~~ CST 401 Dr. Bude Su

  2. Quick Overview: Background • Animation is mostly seen as commercial • Historical use of animation as an art and design form is relegated to small niche • Non-commercial animation too time-consuming and expensive to pursue. • Aesthetic exploration of 3D animation forms confined to experimental media programs (MIT, Cambridge, RIT, Pratt, etc.). • Minimal integration of essential design theory and aesthetic values with non-narrative 3D.

  3. Solution: A non-narrative, abstract 3D animation • 3 to 5 minute high definition animation that integrates the technical demands of 3D animation with design and art aesthetics • Will showcase the blend of art and visual design concepts with 3D technology • Other Deliverables • Capstone Website • Capstone Poster • Capstone Report

  4. Beginning of Animation • Video of drawing simple gird design • This is my first version of it

  5. 2D Parts • Have decided that is best to do 2D parts later in the animation process • Hand drawn shapes transform to 2D vector shapes • Recreate design with motion

  6. 3D Part • 2D Shapes transform to 3D shapes • Slowly change shapes into a metaphorical landscape so that they match the poem • Parts likely to change with feedback from advisor or for artistic/design reasons

  7. Tasks to Complete • Finish modeling 3D • Work on lighting, texturing, & shading • Animate/Key rest of scene • Work on camera shots • Finish 2D part

  8. April 15th • First version done by April 15th • Should be OK as I have lots free time during the week • After the 15th • May still have to add sound and final editing • Website, Poster, Report, & Presentation
