  1. CHPTER 2RESEARCH DESIGN DR.SHINEY CHIB PROFESSOR,DMIMS,NAGPUR

  2. RESEARCH DESIGN RESEARCH DESIGN IS DEFINED AS A PLAN OF ACTION TO BE CARRIED OUT IN CONNECTION WITH A RESEARCH PROJECT. IT IS THE PURPOSEFUL SCHEME OF ACTION PROPOSED TO BE CARRIED OUT IN SEQUENCE DURING THE PROCESS OF RESEARCH FOCUSSING ON THE MANAGEMENT PROBLEM TO BE TACKLED. IT ACT AS THE GUIDE LINE FOR THE RESEARCHER TO ENABLE HIM TO KEEP A TRACK OF HIS ACTIONS AND TO KNOW WHETHER HE IS MOVING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.

  3. STEPS IN RESEARCH DESIGN • IDENTIFYING AND STATING THE MANAGEMENT PROBLEM • RESTATING THE MANAGEMENT PROBLEM AS A RESEARCH PROBLEM • RECOGNISING & RECONCLING WITH THE ORGANIZATIONAL GOALS AND OBJECTIVES • PLANNING THE PROJECT • FORMULATING A HYPOTHESIS • CRYSTALLISING THE OBJECTIVES,PURPOSES,RATIONALE, SCOPE & EXPECTED LIMITATIONS OF THE RESEARCH • PLANNING TO FORMULATE THE RESEARCH PROJECT IDENTIFYING THE RESOURCES INCLUDING FINANCIAL & HUMAN RESOURCES.

  4. SPECIFYING THE TIME PERIOD WITHIN WHICH THE RESEARCH SHOULD BE COMPLETED • IDENTIFYING THE TYPES OF DATA TO BE COLLECTED AND ITS SOUCERS. • SPECIFYING THE METHOD OF DATA COLLECTION & ANALYSIS • ESTIMATE THE EXPECTED RESULT AND COMPARING IT WITH THE COMPANY’S EXPECTATIONS FOR PROBLEM-SOLVING & DECISION MAKING • FINALISING A SYSTEMATIC SCHEME FOR PROCEEDING WITH THE PROJECT INCLUDING SAMPLING, SURVEY, ANALYTICAL FRAME WORK AND REPORT WRITING

  5. FACTORS AFFECTING CHOICE OF RESEARCH DESIGN • EXPECTATION ABOUT THE POTENTIALITY OF RESEARCH TO AID,PROBLEM SOLVING,DECISION MAKING & POLICY MAKING • HYPOTHESIS, PARTICULARLY EXPERIMENTAL AND NON-EXPERIMENTAL HYPOTHESIS • VARAIBLES, ESPECIALLY DEPENDENT, INDEPENDENT AND EXTRANEOUS VARAIBLES • AVALIABLITY OF DATA, PARTICULARLY, PRIMARY DATA • CONFOUNDED RELATIONSHIP • POSSIBLITY OF EXPOSURE TO THE ACTUAL SOURCES OF DATA • TOP MANAGEMENTS ATTITUDE & APPROACHES TO RESEARCH & ITS RESULTS • EXPERIMENTAL AND CONTROL GROUPS • AVAILABLITY OF TIME, MONEY AND MANPOWER. • TREATMENTS • CONTROL • ABILITY, SKIL, KNOWLEDGE AND TECHNICAL BACKGROUND OF THE RESEARCHER. • EXPERIMENTATION AND ITS FACILITY • EXPERIMENTAL UNITS • URGENCY & IMPORTANCE OF THE MANAGEMENT PROBLEM TO BE TACKLED IN THE RESEARCH PROJECT.

  6. TYPES OF RESEARCH DESIGN • EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH DESIGN • RESEARCH DESIGN FOR EXPLORATORY RESEARCH STUDIES • RESEARCH DESIGN FOR DIAGNOSTIC OR DESCRIPTIVE RESEARCH STUDIES

  7. EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH DESIGN • IT IS ALSO CALLED AS HYPOTHESIS-TESTING RESEARCH DESIGNS. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGNS ARE GENERALLY USED IN EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES WERE HYPOTHESES ARE TESTED • 3 PRINCIPLES OF EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH DESIGN • PRINCIPLE OF REPLICATION • PRINCIPLE OF RANDOMISATION • PRINCIPLE OF LOCAL CONTROL.

  8. RESEARCH DESIGN FOR EXPLORATORY RESEARCH STUDIES • IN THIS, A SPECIFIC PROBLEM IS FORMULATED FOR PRECISE INVESTIGATION OR A SPECIFIC HYPOTHESIS IS FORMULATED FROM AN OPERATIONAL OBSERVATION. SUCH STUDIES ARE THEREFORE KNOWN AS FORMULATIVE STUDIES ALSO

  9. DIAGNOSTIC RESEARCH DESIGN • DIAGNOSTIC RESEARCH STUDIES ARE GENERALLY DESCRIPTIVE AND HENCE SUCH STUDIES ARE DESCRIPTIVE STUDIES. CAUSE EFFECT RELATIONSHIP ARE DESCRIBED IN SUCH STUDIES. THIS CONCENTRATES ON THE ASPECTS LIKE SETTING OBJECTIVES, DEFINING & STATING THE PROBLEM UNDER STUDY, DESIGNING THE METHOD OF DATA COLLECTION , INCLUDING SAMPLING AND SURVEY, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA, REPORT WRITING, ARRIVING AT INDUCTION, DEDUCTIONS & CONCLUSIONS ETC.
