  2. What is Nonfiction? The genre that includes works that are based upon facts and reality; the broadest category of written works

  3. Features of Nonfiction The following features are present within the text that help to distinguish nonfiction from other genres: • Table of Contents - Headings/Subheadings • Photograph/Caption - Labels • Text boxes - Charts/Graphs • Maps - Keywords • Index - Glossary

  4. Table of Contents List of major parts of book with page number

  5. Heading/Subheadings Heading A brief description that helps reader group information and predict what will be read Subheading Divides heading into specific topics Keywords Located in the text which can be highlighted by font, style, or color

  6. Photograph/Caption Photograph Caption words near a picture that describe what is in it or what it is about Santa’s mode of transportation across the Sunshine State?

  7. Labels Information that calls attention to a specific item Mortar Tassel

  8. Map Small picture of a large area that indicates location

  9. Charts/Graphs Large amounts of information (i.e., schedules, tables) organized in a small area

  10. At the back of the book… Glossary – The alphabetical list of key words that are related to the topic with their definition or meaning Index - The alphabetical list of the big ideas and key words and the page numbers where they can be found; this listing follows the glossary
