  2. What is Health? • The combination of physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and social well-being • The state of being free from illness or injury • Striving to be the best you can be at any given time

  3. Wellness • An overall state of well-being, or total health • Achieving wellness requires an ongoing, lifelong commitment to physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and social health

  4. The Health Continuum *Health can be measured on a sliding scale, many fall just below the wellness point • Premature Death • High Level of Health

  5. Promoting Your Health • Make responsible decisions about health and develop good healthy habits • LIFESTYLE FACTORS (habits) – factors that affect: • Overall health • Happiness • Longevity – how long you live • Prevention – practicing health & safety habits to remain free of disease & injury. • Ex: wearing sunscreen to protect skin from cancer

  6. 10 Lifestyle Factors (habits) • 8-10 hours a sleep • Healthy breakfast! • Variety of nutritious foods • Physically active for at least 20 min/day • Maintain healthy weight • Avoid tobacco, alcohol, & drugs • Abstain from sex before marriage • Manage stress • Positive relationships • Be safe to prevent injuries

  7. Becoming Health Literate • Healthy literacy – to learn and understand health information & services & to use resources to promote health

  8. A health-literate individual needs to be a(n)… • Critical thinker & problem solver • Responsible, productive citizen – promotes health in community & chooses safe, healthful, legal behaviors • Self-directed learner – seeks reliable, accurate, and current information • Effective communicator – expresses health knowledge

  9. Health “Triangle” • Physical Health – how well body functions • ENERGY & resist DISEASE • Mental Health – learning new things, enjoy challenges • Mistakes = growth & change • Emotional Health – respect feelings & express them • Can respond well to others’ emotions

  10. Health “Triangle” • Social Health – way you get along with others • Making FRIENDS • Communicating • Confidence & trusting yourself • Compassion for others • Spiritual – explore relationship w/God • Own divinity • Greater purpose • Outside physical realm

Influences on Health • Environment – sum of surroundings • Physical Environ – crime, smog • Social Environ – PEOPLE! • Peers – people of the same age who share similar interests • CHOOSE POSITIVE PEOPLE!!! • Culture – collective beliefs, customs, & behaviors of a group • Language, food, traditions, religion

  12. Influences on Health • Heredity – all the traits that were biologically passed on from parents • Hair color, height • Attitude – views • positive or negative view on challenges • Behavior - choose healthy habits!

  13. Influences on Health • Media – various methods of communicating information • Delivery of information • Technology • Advances in medical technology are positive • Negative if people watch TV instead of being active

Interpersonal Communication • The exchange of thoughts, feelings, and beliefs between 2 or more people • Clearly say what you mean: use “I” messages to state your position • Pay attention to how you say something: tone of voice, facial expressions, & body language • Be a good listener: don’t interrupt, nod head & ask questions when appropriate

  18. Refusal Skills • Communication strategies that can help you say no when you are urged to take part in behaviors that are: • Unsafe • Unhealthy • Go against your values.

  19. Refusal Strategies • Say no in firm voice • Explain why • State your feelings, goes against values/beliefs • Suggest alternatives • Healthy activity instead • Use appropriate body language • Use eye contact • Leave! • Just walk away

  20. Conflict Resolution • The process of ending a conflict through cooperation & problem solving • Take time to calm down & think through the situation • Speak calmly & listen, ask questions when appropriate • Work to resolve conflict peacefully using a polite tone when discussing solutions

  21. Advocacy • Taking action to influence others to address a concern or to support a belief

  22. Goals • Something you aim for that takes planning & work • Short-term goal: a goal you can reach in a short period of time • Ex: getting an ‘A’ on your test this week • Long-term goal: a goal you plan to reach over an extended period of time • Ex: to graduate from college

Achieving Your Goals • Make an action plan - steps to identify & reach goals • Set specific, realistic goal & write it down • List the steps to reach it • Identify sources of support • Set a reasonable time frame for reaching your goal • Evaluate your progress by setting checkpoints • Reward yourself for achieving your goal

  24. Character • Distinctive qualities that describe how a person thinks, feels, & behaves

  25. Traits of Good Character • Trustworthy – honest, loyal, reliable • Respect – considerate, tolerant, manners • Responsible – self control, consider consequences • Fair – play by rules, share • Caring – kind, compassionate, help people • Citizenship – obey laws & rules, respect authority, good neighbor

  26. Role Model • Someone whose success or behavior serves as an example for others
