Amniotic egg—an egg that can survive on land • Amplexus—positioning of a male amphibian in which the forelimbs are around female waist • Buccal pump—mechanism that allows for lung ventilation in amphibians • Buccopharyngeal respiration—gas exchange across the moist surfaces of mouth and pharynx • Cutaneous respiration—gas exchange across the skin • Lissamphibia—living amphibians • Nictitating membrane—thin, transparent lower eyelid of amphibians • Tetrapod—name that refers to animals that have 4 limbs • Ectotherm—animal whose body temperature is controlled by external sources • Vocal cord—sound-producing band of tissue in the throat • Liver—organ that produces bile • Pancreas—secretes enzymes into small intestine; helps to break down food • Cloaca—muscular cavity that stores feces until elimination through the anus • Atrium—upper chamber of heart; receives incoming blood • Ventricle—lower chamber of heart; pumps blood out of heart • Bladder—waste products from kidneys stored here until released from body • Tympanic membrane—circular structure behind each eye; receive sound waves • Thyroxine—hormone that triggers metamorphosis in amphibians • Neoteny—when reproductive adults retain larval characteristics
