  1. Using Elaboration Theory to Increase AIU’s Below-average Students Grades in Algebra Adam Mohamed Ali, Kedah, AlorSetar, Malaysia (mr.adam.mohamed@gmail.com) G10 SHL1013 Professional English (13 December 2013) Background & Urgency of the Problem Proposed Poster Design Timeline & Implementation Strategy • Week 1: Design a poster • Week 2: produce 100 copies of posters • Week 3: distribute these copies to those failed students in Algebra Course • Week 4. The improvement made by the students will be recorded. • Number of students failed different math courses such as Algebra, Calculus, and Statistics. • Algebra has the least failures other than Statistics and Calculus. • Failed students are from various cultures. • Failure causes stress to the students which might possibly result dropping out from the university. 5 Golden Rules for Memorizing and Understanding any Algebra Formula Nothing is hard unless you try 5 3 Image Here Main Image Here Image Here 1 Projected Challenges & Solutions Statement of the Problem & Proposal Image Courtesy of (stylemens.typepad.com) • Some of the students might not be interested in improving there math skills through this process as it looks tedious and hard to cop with. Solution: never give up(Fensterwald, 2012, para. 1). • Some of the students might have taken Math in their secondary schools as some countries do offer a chance of leaving a selected course. Solution: Ask help friends and self educate (Cortez, 2011, para. 2). AIU below-average foundation students (Tanoh, 2013, para. 3) who could not proceed to undergraduate studies due their failure of Algebra course (Paton, 2012, para.2)can use for 20 minutes a day a poster with 5 pictures from the internet in English about five ways on how to memorize, understand and apply Algebra formulas to pass course and proceed to UGP (Sadoloski, 2009, para. 1). If you still face any difficulty; ask a lecturer for help Study ina quite area Study with a group Methodology Theoretical Background Firstly those failed students will have their names recorded. They will be questioned to understand the cause of their failure. Photographs from the internet will be used as visual aids. The number of posters to be produced will be decided Five useful steps will be used on the poster • The theory explains that humans have two systems : Verbal and visual and that is what allows the memory to make a dual code at the same time (Sadoski, 2009, para. 2). • Elaboration theory explains that a learner should have an organized content from simple to complex order (Wilson and Cole, 1992, para.1) Statement of the Thesis About the Writer Theoretical Application Using Reigeluth theory of Elaboration and Dual Code theory to design a visual poster that guide can guide and help AIU’s below-average foundation Students to understand and memorize Algebra formulas by 85% in less than a month. Adam Mohamed Ali is a Banking and Finance Scholar of Albukhary International University. He wrote this proposal to help those students, who failed math courses in FSP, and did not proceed to UGP, so they could finally pass math courses by following the provided steps. • The theory of Elaboration is used in writing the five steps as they are organized from simple to complex order, while Dual Code is also needed in one of the steps which is basically step 3, close your eyes and recall the information without looking the notes.
