  1. This presentation will walk you through how to build a trip estimate WITHOUT creating an unnecessary document within the Defense Travel System (DTS) This tool is a valuable asset for any traveler looking to obtain a trip estimate before actually creating an authorization within DTS. This enables you to quickly adjust the details to see what the over-all costs may be, especially if comparing locations for training (i.e., DC vs. San Diego (closer doesn’t always mean “cheaper”). You can save the trips you create for future reference and at the end you are provided a summary. Creating an estimated trip expense worksheet Travelers are encouraged to use this tool vice creating authorizations within DTS when simply obtaining a trip estimate.

Start at the DTS homepagehttp://www.defensetravel.osd.mil/dts/site/index.jsp • Then click on the Travel Trax icon (lower left hand side of your screen where the boot print is” https://www.defensetravel.dod.mil/Passport If you do not already have a DTMO login, you will need to register to use the site. Once you have registered, it is recommended that you set-up CAC access for quick, easy access to the site

  4. Select TRIP TOOLS from the top of the screen

  5. Start building your trip 

  6. Select Quick Tools on the right hand side

  7. Enter the dates and location, the click on “search per diem rate”

  8. See the results and for expanded information, click on “See the math”

  9. Use the green arrow button at the bottom to move forward through the next screens to obtain the estimates for each item Use the arrow buttons on the bottom of the screen NOT your browser arrows to move forward/backward

  10. Select the city pair neededRemember you are PROHIBITED from flying in/out of leave sites if the leave site is different than the TAD location
