Why should I understand art? • Being inquisitive is a good quality that tends to expand your understanding of what it means to be a human being. • Art often attempts to present something meaningful, universally important, and timeless as it relates to being a human being. • Understanding art often means that you are participating/exercising your mind with challenging experiences which can help develop your ability to think critically. • Artistic expression can be among the highest forms of intelligent demonstration.

How do I know if something is really, really good. • You will never forget it. • It will not be trite or cliché. • It will touch you deeply. • You might say, “How did she/he come up with this?” • You might say, “If anything in this piece is changed or removed, it will weaken it.” • It will challenge you or change you. • It will communicate in a very unique or rare way.
