  2. Nouns • Nouns- a word or word group that is used to name a person, a place, a thing, or an idea.

  3. Identifying Nouns • Many American Indian leaders have been known for their courage and wisdom. • Chief Joesph of the Nez Perce was a wise leader. • He was an educated man; he wrote that his people believed in justice and honor.

  4. Compound Nouns • A compound noun is made up of two or more words used together as a single noun.

  5. Identifying Compound Nouns • Louise Braille was born in 1809 in France. • His father was a saddlemaker who often let Louis play with pieces of leather. • In 1812, when the three-year-old tried to punch a whole in a piece of leather, the tool slipped and injured his eye.

  6. Common and Proper Nouns • A common noun names any one of a group of persons, places, things, or ideas. • A proper noun names a particular person, place, thing, or idea.

  7. Identifying Common and Proper Nouns • My whole family visited San Francisco during our vacation last year. • The city is famous for its hilly landscape. • Oakland, which is across the bay, has a number of teams that play professional sports.

  8. Collective Nouns • A collective noun is a word that names a group.

  9. Identifying Collective Nouns • I went with a group of students to see the monument that commemorates Abraham Lincoln. • Each day huge crowds visit the Lincoln Memorial, which is in Washington, DC.
