  1. Marine Geology Using GEODE • Welcome! • Please get a binder and USB drive • Sit wherever you wish (at a computer) • Introductions to come…..

  2. Where We Teach

  3. Where We Teach

  4. What We Teach

  5. How you currently teach about marine sediments in your course(s) • Focus on sed rates and basin geography and plate tectonics. • Focus on controls on sediment input; sources & processes • Use microscopes and hand samples to look at marine sediments, connect to rocks that form from them and environmental settings. • Lectures, with lots of pictures of sediment smear slides • Exercise in SERC: Learning About Marine Sediments Using Real Data • Field trips

  6. Your Goals (from Applications) • Engage your students, help them become active learners • many of my students have never considered that marine sediments exist • Mainly focus on intro courses, but want to build up materials for advanced courses too. • Create new labs/activities for labs, homework, and online; want to bounce ideas off and co-create with others. • New professor/applying to jobs – want to build skill sets and teaching resources. • Bring more geology and real data into oceanography course • Connect research to teaching.

  7. Our Goals (from Program Description)Provide an opportunity for you to: • Explore marine sediments using Google Earth, including a "ready to go" student exercise. • Explore the ocean basins using Google Earth. • Outline ideas for how these resources could be used in their teaching. • Prepare sample requests to IODP for physical samples of marine sediment lithologies. • Network with other faculty who teach oceanography or related courses.

  8. Other Logistics • Travel Stipend form – collect on Friday • Computer usernames and passwords • Check that Google Earth Pro is on computer
