  1. Preliminary Results of Magnetic Field Analysis for Specific Items in Step IV Control Racks Behind Nth Shield Wallmodelled with Aluminium or Steel frame Mike Courthold2nd October2012

  2. Steel racks behind Nth Wall – Field strength on far side of Nth Wall is 0.4T, thus621G max on rack sides

  3. Steel racks behind Nth Wall – Field strength on far side of Nth Wall is 0.4T, hence effect on rack sides

  4. Steel racks behind Nth Wall – 18G max inside

  5. Steel racks behind Nth Wall – 18G max inside

  6. Steel racks behind Nth Wall – 18G max inside

  7. Aluminium racks behind Nth Wall – Field strength on far side of Nth Wall still0.4T, but only 5G max on rack sides

  8. Aluminium racks behind Nth Wall – Field strength on far side of Nth Wall is still 0.4T, but now negligible effect on frame

  9. Aluminium racks behind Nth WallField now increased from 18G to 38G max inside

  10. Aluminium racks behind Nth WallField now increased from 18G to 38G max inside

  11. Conclusion • Changing rack frames from steel to aluminium dramatically reduces the field experienced by the rack frame from 621G to 5G • But the field experienced by ferrous objects inside the rack has increased, according to this crude model, from 18G to 38G • The model is as yet to crude to indicate whether the choice of aluminium framed racks would be beneficial, as no attempt has been made to accurately distribute the mass within
