  1. WHAT IF WE INCLUDED PIT-EMPTYING SERVICES TO KIOSK-BASED WATER TARIFFS?

  2. Water For People’s Possible Role • Provide market analysis for Gulper and WUA • Brokering WUA + Gulper Business Partnership • Ensuring enough Gulpers are available to meet market demand (including possible launch of service before WUA has collected sufficient funds?) + SERVICE NOW Increase to 7 MWK / bucket = 3500-4900 MWK/day = Additional 30,000 – 45,000 MWK / month / kiosk = 12-18 drums each month per kiosk area @ 2500 MWK / drum* **2500 MWK / drum can be negotiated down. 5 MWK / bucket @ 2500-3500 MWK/day = 500-700 buckets sold / day @ one kiosk = 100-140 households = 100-140 latrines in kiosk catchment area.

  3. HOW WE CAME UP WITH THESE NUMBERS:5 MWK / bucket @ 2500-3500 MWK/day = 500-700 buckets sold / day @ one kiosk (@ 5 buckets/day = 100-140 households = 100-140 latrines in kiosk catchment area.***IF TARIFF CHANGED TO 7 MWK / bucket = 3500 – 4900 MWK / day @ 500-700 buckets = additional 1000-1500 MWK / day @ kiosk = additional 30,000 – 45,000 MWK each month – all else being equal@ 2500 MWK per drum emptied, a kiosk could pay for 12-18 drums to be emptied each month. (** if cheaper price could be negotiated with gulper guy, because of volume, consistency – more drums could be emptied each month).Construction is not considered in this equation. Does it need to be?*** Rough Data collected in October 2010 in ndirande, LIA of Blantyre Questions: Why wouldn’t people just go to another kiosk? If landlords are paying now, why are we shifting cost to tenant? What’s in it for them? What defines a catchment area around the kiosk? What toilets are included? What if water isn’t flowing? How to prioritize which pits emptied? How often does gulper guy come? What is incentive for tenants to pay – when it is currently an issue taken care of by the landlord? What about in areas that don’t have high latrine coverage (improved or unimproved latrines)? Is this enough income for a gulper to be a full-time ongoing business? What about public toilets, offices, marketplaces, etc? What is in it for the WUA (to take on the management of it)? A fee?
