Welcome to Physics SCI 340

Welcome to Physics SCI 340! This course focuses on mechanics and utilizes standards-based grading. Your final grade depends on the standards you meet and labs completed. Quizzes are online on Wednesdays, and homework is required to redo quizzes. Retakes are available for standards if you did the homework. The letter grade criteria for each term, midterm, and year are outlined. Make sure to stay up to date with reading, homework, and labs to succeed in this cumulative course.

  1. Welcome to Physics SCI 340 2018-2019

  2. Mechanics of the Course

  3. Standards-based grading Grade depends on standards met and labs completed The more standards you meet, the higher your final grade

  4. Quizzes Generally online on Wednesdays Assess on standards (no numeric score)

  5. Homework • Do not count toward grade • Prepare for quizzes • Homework is required to redo quizzes

  6. Standards Retakes • Available if you did the homework and additional make-up work (usually revisions) • Generally on line • In office hours if few students need a standard • Passing score counts • At least two extra chances if eligible

  7. Letter Grade Criteria: Term A+ satisfy 98% of standards and miss ≤ 1 lab A satisfy 95% of standards and miss ≤ 1 lab A− satisfy 93% of standards and miss ≤ 1 lab B+ satisfy 91% of standards and miss ≤ 1 lab B satisfy 88% of standards and miss ≤ 1 lab B− satisfy 88% of standards and miss ≤ 2 labs C+ satisfy 85% of standards and miss ≤ 2 labs C satisfy 80% of standards and miss ≤ 3 labs C− satisfy 75% of standards and miss ≤ 4 labs

  8. Letter Grade Criteria: Midterm A+ satisfy 97% of standards and miss ≤ 1 lab A satisfy 93% of standards and miss ≤ 1 lab A− satisfy 90% of standards and miss ≤ 1 lab B+ satisfy 87% of standards and miss ≤ 1 lab B satisfy 83% of standards and miss ≤ 1 lab B− satisfy 80% of standards and miss ≤ 2 labs C+ satisfy 77% of standards and miss ≤ 2 labs C satisfy 73% of standards and miss ≤ 3 labs C− satisfy 70% of standards and miss ≤ 4 labs

  9. Letter Grade Criteria: Year A+ satisfy 98% of standards and miss ≤ 2 labs A satisfy 95% of standards and miss ≤ 2 labs A− satisfy 93% of standards and miss ≤ 2 labs B+ satisfy 91% of standards and miss ≤ 2 labs B satisfy 88% of standards and miss ≤ 3 labs B− satisfy 88% of standards and miss ≤ 4 labs C+ satisfy 85% of standards and miss ≤ 5 labs C satisfy 80% of standards and miss ≤ 6 labs C− satisfy 75% of standards and miss ≤ 7 labs

  10. Scores on Standards S Satisfactory R Retest at next opportunity N Needs to revise E Retest at final F Not eligible for reassessment • S is the only score satisfying a standard • Other scores tell what needs to happen

  11. Scores on labs C Complete I Incomplete F Not eligible for revision • C is the passing score

  12. Labs • Reports due by lab next week • One week after return to substantively fix • Late labs or revisions earn F

  13. Absence Policy • Contact me beforehand if foreseen • Contact me ASAP for emergencies • Arrange make-up upon return • No make-up or re-take for items missed without approval • Labs pro-rated if make-up impractical

  14. Exams Final Last opportunity to make up missed standards Evaluate on standards

  15. Textbook • Cutnell and Johnson, Physics

  16. How to Succeed

  17. Read the Textbook • Read before class • Study after

  18. Do the homework • For practice • Required to redo standards

  19. Homework Grace • Miss one homework without penalty • Make up one late homework before retest • Don’t push it

  20. Make timely progress • Make up missed standards and incomplete labs ASAP • The subject is cumulative

  21. Reading for Next Time • Distance, velocity, and acceleration: how physics describes motion • Keep in mind the relations between different quantities
