  2. Headlines should: • Be conversational • Contain a verb • Be written in present tense • Be written in active voice • Summarize the story accurately

  3. Headlines should: • Attract the reader’s attention • Be understandable • Use short words; be concise • Contain drama

  4. Other Tips: • Avoid using weak words such as a, an, the – and is, are or other forms of to be • Concentrate on lead paragraph as source of information for headline • It is more important to be informative than cute or clever

  5. Do not separate from one line to the next: • A preposition from its object • Parts of the same verb • Parts of names • Abbreviations • A noun and its adjective • A hyphenated word
