  4. A. Describing Loneliness • An emotion that is hard to put into words • We know what it feels like, but it is hard to describe. • It is triggered through many life experiences

  5. A. Describing Loneliness • Solitary Confinement • Retirement • People who lose a spouse to death • Disease that takes someone away from us slowly • Divorce • Singles who desire a mate

  6. A. Describing Loneliness • Latch-key kids • Moms at home all day with small children • Sales persons • People who have to move • College students away for the first time • Empty-nesters • Sometimes we feel it in large crowds

  7. A. Describing Loneliness • It is a feeling of dejection over the sense of feeling alone. • “a feeling of separation, isolation, or distance in human relations. Loneliness implies emotional pain.” • Thomas Wolfe

  8. B. Detailing Loneliness • There is a difference between being alone and being lonely. • People in our culture do not like being alone • People in our culture do not like quiet.

  9. B. Detailing Loneliness • The Bible reminds us that we need times to be silent and quiet. We need time to be alone • Psalm 46:10 • 1 Kings 19: 11-13 • Luke 5: 16

  10. B. Detailing Loneliness • When we face loneliness, we should thank God for it reminds us we were made for a relationship • It is not a sign of emotional weakness to sense loneliness • Jesus: “My God, my God….” “Why?”

Detailing Loneliness • We should be aware of some dangers of loneliness because if we are not and handle it incorrectly, it can lead us into sin. • Seeking People before Seeking God • Seeking to overcome it without a clear commitment to or understanding what the Bible says about relationships

  12. B. Detailing Loneliness • Beware of dangers • Bad Company (1 Cor. 15:33) • Do not be yoked (2 Cor. 6:14) • Flee fornication (1 Cor. 6: 18) • Take time to study and to commit to biblical fidelity in your living.

  13. B. Detailing Loneliness • Beware of dangers • You need an accountability group • Have a greater emphasis on the spiritual than the physical.

  14. C. Defeating Loneliness • Remember you are never alone as a believer • John 16: 32 • 2 Tim. 4: 16-17 • John 14: 15-18

  15. C. Defeating Loneliness • Don’t seek companionship in that which is artificial • God has designed us to be with people. • Pray for wisdom and protection, then reach out. (Prov. 18: 24; 1 John 5: 14-15)

  16. C. Defeating Loneliness • Don’t compromise Biblical convictions • Look for God’s unexpected blessings.
