  1. 1 Use pp. 356-360 in the blue book to complete. 2 1930’s—Japan, German, and __________________________ invade other countries. The League of Nations protests, but no action is taken. Hitler sees this as his opportunity to take over Austria and the Sudetenland, part of ________________________. He ends up taking over all of Czechoslovakia. England and France allowed Hitler to do it. The were eager to avoid war with Hitler. This policy is known as ________________________. 2 1936--Civil war breaks out in __________________. Hitler helps Franco, who is a fascist, win. Hitler’s newly rebuilt armies need practice, so they use Spain as a dress rehearsal for WWII. WWII Highlights 3 1939--Hitler invades _________________in September of 1939. France and _______________________ declare war on Germany. World War II has begun! 4 1940-1941—The Axis Powers (Germany, Italy, and __________________) are very successful against the Allies (Great Britain and France). 5 1941—The USA enters the war due to the Japanese attack on _________________ ______________. December 7, 1941, is “a date that will live in infamy!” Also in 1941, Germany turns on its ally, the Soviet Union, and attacks them. The USA and the Soviet Union join the ______________________. 6 1943--Germany is fighting on both the eastern and western fronts. In 1943, they lose a major battle in ____________________, in the Soviet Union. This major blow to Hitler’s army is the turning point of the war. Also in 1943, Mussolini loses power. ___________________’s new leader agrees to stop fighting the Allies. 7 1944—The ________________ invasion brings Allied forces onto the beaches of Normandy. From there, they push Germany back from the west, while Soviet forces push them from the east. 8 • 1945--On April 30th, _____________ kills himself and ______________ surrenders. On August 6 and 9 of 1945, two atomic ________________ are dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Five days later, Japan surrenders. The war is over!
