  1. District 150 MATHEMATICS VOCABULARY Overview Prepared by Trish Guinee, K-12 Mathematics Coordinator

  2. “…vocabulary learningand mathematical understanding are intertwined.” (Thompson & Rubenstein, 2000)

  3. OVERVIEW • Grade Level Math Vocabulary Lists • Vocabulary Instruction – based on the work of Robert Marzano • Support for Teachers

  4. Grade Level Math Vocabulary • Comprehensive, District-wide Vocabulary: K-8 and Algebra 1-2 • 25-40 words and terms that are CRITICAL to the development of mathematical concepts at each grade

  5. Grade Level Vocabulary A conscious effort must be made to intentionally teach vocabulary!

  6. VOCABULARY INSTRUCTION • Introduce / Develop the concept that incorporates the CRITCAL WORD. Classroom Example Have students engage in a meaningful mathematical task to introduce the concept and vocabulary.

  7. VOCABULARY INSTRUCTION • Ask students to describe the CRITICAL WORD using their own words and representations. Example: Critical word:____________________________ My understanding: 1,2,3,4 Describe: ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Representations:

  8. VOCABULARY INSTRUCTION • Ask students to describe the CRITICAL WORD using their own words and representations. Another Example:

  9. VOCABULARY INSTRUCTION • Continually revisitthe CRITICAL WORD: Students refine, improve definition • Develop understanding: Students make connections among ideas / terms / concepts • Reinforce vocabularyusing games

  10. Sample Lesson Plan for Vocabulary Instruction • Begin with a mathematical task. Students enter the CRITICAL WORD into their vocabulary notebooks. • Students engage in other tasks to develop their understanding of the concept and critical word in more depth. Students discuss the critical word with each other. Students revisit and revise their definition and representations. • A more formal definition evolves. • Periodically reinforce CRITICAL WORDS using games. The word becomes part of classroom discourse.

  11. Support for Teachers • Work together in grade level or content area teams • Grade Level Leaders • Teacher Academy Courses • District Mathematics Website: • http://www.psd150.org/math/District150_math_home.htm
