  2. INVOCATION: A Definition • the act of invoking or calling upon a deity, spirit, etc., for aid, protection, inspiration, or the like; supplication. • an entreaty for aid and guidance from a Muse, deity, etc., at the beginning of an epic or epiclike poem.

  3. 2. When did the modern superhero come to life? In the midst of the Great Depression, at the dawning of the Second World War. 3. What did superheroes provide for the people? A means of comfort and escape. 4. Who was the first great superhero? Superman.

  4. 5. What were the first villains Superman fought? Gangsters, corrupt politicians, fascists, and war profiteers. 6. What can we chart/connect the popularity of superheroes to in America? The rise and fall of public confidence and sense of well-being. 7. In the 1980’s, who were the villains Batman fought? Drug gangs, smugglers, and assorted other street thugs.
