  1. Merce Cunningham 1919-2009

  2. *One of Martha Graham’s students and performers. *He was the first to: -challenge the ideas of the founders of modern dance. - choreograph just for the camera. -use a computer program to choreograph. *Believed dance was about movement and movement only, dropped concern for plot and communication.

  3. Interpretations of his works were left to the audience, they were different each time you saw them because you were different. • *He considered dance a reflection of life, because our lives are not logical, controlled and orderly. Things happen to us by chance all the time. • *Uses “defocused space” in the theater, believed all space was important, not just stage space. • *Used Asian practices of chance in his choreography to determine order of events and which dancer would dance which part.

  4. *Music, set, and costumes were added at the time of the performance. *John Cage was a musician that teamed up with Cunningham. He used all kinds of sound for music-even silence; also created electronic music. *Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns created sets and costumes three minutes before performances.
