  1. Journal-Based Learning in an Online Environment Kim Ades, MBA President and Founder of Frame of Mind Coaching and JournalEngine™ Software kim@frameofmindcoaching.com

  2. 3 Goals… • To share my personal journey • To explain how I use online journaling • To demonstrate the impact of journaling and and discuss other possible applications

  3. Me… • Kim Ades, MBA • President and Founder of Frame of Mind Coaching and JournalEngine™ Software • Coach Leaders • Certify Coaches • JE Software

  4. My Story… • Built Simulation-based Assessments to help companies identify top performers • Discovery 1: People with a higher degree of emotional resilience are more likely to succeed

  5. Personal challenge led me to pick up my journal Discovery 2: Journaling is therapeutic and accelerates recovery and forward focus

  6. I read everything I could get my hands on about well-being, happiness, and success. Discovery 3: Successful people think differently

  7. Frame of Mind Coaching was Born But,I had a few fears…

  8. Pilot • 10 Weeks • 1 call per week • Group experience • Co-coach • Journaling every day

  9. Findings surprised me: • Willingness to share and self-expose • Group Cohesion was high • No missed calls • Results were tangible and intangible • More Sales/More Listings • Increased Confidence/Less Self-Doubt • More Harmony in Relationships/Less Conflict • More Happiness/Less Distress

  10. Unexpected Benefits • No loss of momentum between calls • Results were documented • Intimacy and trust was established quickly • Results happened fast • Self –reflection was high • Ripple effect was palpable Discovery 4: Journaling is paramount to powerful coaching

  11. Over time, my focus evolved to leaders and how they could really engage their team and get the best out of them. Discovery 5: The way a leader thinks and views the world has an overwhelming trickle-down effect on the overall success of the company.

  12. Example 1 “I guess I don't like conflict in personal relationships, not that I think everything should always be roses and honey, but that ‘disagreement’ means that we made a mistake getting married. I'm not sure why. Even though my parents got divorced, they rarely fought or showed any real disagreement. On the other hand, we spent a lot of time with another married couple when I was young and they fought a lot in a way that I felt was disrespectful and harmful. I think maybe it's that I don't have a good role model for a marriage that has healthy conflict. In my relationships, there has never been a lot of conflict and I think I'm not very prepared for it. What am I really afraid of? I guess that I will discover something that will mean we shouldn't be together. Or that we won't be able to resolve easily.” Teaching Note:This comes from a executive level client after 4 weeks of coaching. It is a reply to the question “How does conflict impact your relationships?”

  13. Example 2 “I learned something today... I still have so much to learn. We had a large meeting today with our sponsor and my boss and a difficult parent. Anyway, I took the wrong perspective and blamed the parent for the issues and short-comings of the placement. I felt as if I was supporting my team but in actuality I got caught up in blaming the parent and didn't try to see her point of view. I have been trying to avoid what I perceived as conflict and it resulted in this large meeting in which things were discussed that could have been handled internally. I want to do better.” Teaching Note:This comes from a mid-level director after 8 weeks of coaching.

  14. Example 3 “I am finding my biggest internal struggle is from going from doer/manager to leader and letting people make mistakes. I need to stop so I do not drive myself insane. Half of my stress comes from taking on too much because I do not trust others to do their job. I know they have good intentions, but the mistakes they have been making are HUGE and I am held to those as well.”

  15. Kim Ades Here's a question for you...do you feel that you have the adequate power and resources to do your job effectively? - Monday at 10:14pm Adeabler  No to both...but I also feel like I am expected to develop it. I have been told to get what I need. I have a confidential search happening for one position and may need another to start for another position. - Monday at 10:19pm Kim Ades  I can see how hiring the right talent will ease your load... tell me about the lack of power. -Tuesday at 10:49am . Adeabler  I used to feel I had the power, but am feeling a struggle with Eric lately. He has given me the go ahead to hire some staff and address things, but when it comes to my staff, we are providing contradictory requests. Then my staff no longer see me as the leader. -Tuesday at 1:06pm . Kim Ades So what do you need to do to align your message with Eric? -Tuesday at 5:43pm
