When Do I paraphrase? • I want to use another writer’s words without plagiarizing. • I want to use another writer's words without quotes.
How long is a paraphrase? • It is the same length as the original piece.
Summary: Definition • Summary: putting down the main ideas of someone else’s work in your own words. • Include ONLY the main points –leave out details that don’t matter!
When do I summarize? • When you want to indentify only the main points of the writer. • When you want an overview of a topic • When you need to simplify an article.
How long is a Summary? • About 1/3 the length of the original text.
How are Paraphrasing & summarizing different? • Same length • Don’t leave anything out • Shorter - 1/3 length • Include only main points Paraphrasing Summarizing
Paraphrase or summary?? • Spanish is widely spoken in the United States by many people. Some people who speak it are immigrants who moved to the US from another Spanish-speaking country. Others, are the children whose families speak Spanish, and a few are English-speakers who have learned Spanish. Regardless of how it is learned, Spanish is widely spoken language. • Many people speak Spanish in the US. People who have moved here from other countries can speak Spanish. Sometimes families speak Spanish, so their kids also speak it too. Occasionally, English speakers will learn Spanish in school. It doesn't matter how Spanish acquired, it is spoken by many people.
Paraphrase or summary?? • Speaking Spanish is a skill that could help you get a job. With the number of Spanish-speaking people rising, all types of businesses need employees who can speak Spanish. Hospitals need Spanish speaking doctors and nurses to communicate with patients. Schools need teachers who can speak Spanish with parents and students. As you can see, Spanish will help you get hired! • Since there are so many people who now speak Spanish, it is a valuable skill that will really help you get a job.
