A.C.T.S. in the Lord’s Prayer • The Lord’s Prayer opens with adoration. • 3/7 petitions ask for God to do things on earth as in heaven (Adoration/Thanks) • 1/7 petitions ask God to provide for our physical needs (Supplication) • 3/7 petitions ask God for help with our sin: past, present, and future (Confession) • The doxology is adoration motivated by God’s goodness.

How Martin Luther Prayed THROUGH the Lord’s Prayer • Prayed 5 times per day (Wake up, Each Meal, Bedtime) • Prayed 1-2 hours per day (on busy days he prayed longer) • Not praying about his busyness but doing something he liked better. • Prayed: Lord’s Prayer, Ten Commandments, and Apostle’s Creed. • Fourfold prayer method “a simple way to pray”. • Summarized, Thanked, Confessed, and Asked God for what he saw.

  5. Three ways NOT to pray • Don’t show off for people (like a hypocrite/actor) • instead pray with sincerity. • Don’t show off for God (like a pagan/gentile) • instead pray short and simple. • Don’t show off for yourself (as an unforgiven/ing person) • instead pray with sorrow for sin.

Praying for God’s Kingdom, Righteousness, and All these things Matthew 6:25 (NIV84) Matthew 6:25 (NIV84) 25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? • Life = Requires food and drink • Body = Requires Clothes • Your life and body are more important food, drink, and clothes.

Praying for God’s Kingdom, Righteousness, and All these things Matthew 6:26-27 (NIV84) Matthew 6:26-27 (NIV84) 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? • Birds = Animals God feeds • If God even feeds animals, how much more will He take care of you His children.

They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? • Flowers/Grass = Plants that God clothes • If God even feeds animals, how much more will He take care of you His children.

Praying for God’s Kingdom, Righteousness, and All these things Matthew 6:31-32 (NIV84) Matthew 6:31-32 (NIV84) 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. • Pagans/Gentiles = People who don’t know God that God feeds and clothes. • If God even feeds ungodly people, how much more will He take care of you His children.

Praying for God’s Kingdom, Righteousness, and All these things Matthew 6:33-34 (NIV84) Matthew 6:33-34 (NIV84) 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. • All these things = Food, Drink, and Clothing that we need. • God’s kingdom and righteousness = Where to focus our time and energy on instead.

Tempted by hunger, wickedness, and the Devil’s Worldly Kingdom Matthew 4:1-4 (NIV84) Matthew 4:1-4 (NIV84) 1 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” 4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” • Temptation: Hunger (All these things/Daily bread related temptation)

Tempted by hunger, wickedness, and the Devil’s Worldly Kingdom Matthew 4:5-7 (NIV84) Matthew 4:5-7 (NIV84) 5 Then the devil took him the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6 “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written: “ ‘He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’” 7 Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’” • Temptation: Wickedness (Righteousness/Temptation and Deliverance related temptation)

Tempted by hunger, wickedness, and the Devil’s Worldly Kingdom Matthew 4:8-11 (NIV84) • Matthew 4:8-11 (NIV84) 8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.” 10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’” 11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him. • Temptation: Devil’s Earthly Kingdom (God’s Heavenly Kingdom related temptation)

Kingdom Our father in heaven/On earth as it is in heaven: • Praying for God’s name to be kept holy and God’s Kingdom to come IS praying for God’s will to be done (these are all kingdom prayers). • Praying according to God’s will/for things God has promised/in Jesus’ name IS praying for God’s will to be done.

Kingdom Your will be done: • Praying according to God’s will = Allowing God to say “no” to our request, like Jesus did by adding “not my will but yours be done”. • Praying for things God has promised = how be confident that God will answer our prayers. • Praying in Jesus’ name = signing Jesus’ name on the check/using Jesus’ credit card

  16. All These Things Daily: • Emphasizes relationship and keeping us alive physically.

  17. All These Things Bread: • Includes all the things that we need to live.

All These Things (Luke 11) • The disciples asked Jesus how to pray: • since other disciples asked their teachers how to pray. • since they wanted to pray like Jesus prayed. • You can even get food from: • a cranky neighbor in the middle of the night by asking. • a sinful earthly father by asking. • How much more can you: • get food from your holy, loving, heavenly Father by asking. • get spiritually good things from God too.

  19. Righteousness Relationship and keeping us alive Spiritually: • We need God to keep us in Jesus.

Righteousness Daily Bread Revisited: • Spiritual bread = God’s word (Matthew 4, Luke 4) • Spiritual bread = God’s will (John 4) • Spiritual bread = God’s Spirit (Luke 11) • Spiritual bread = God’s Son (John 6, Matthew 26, Luke 22, Mark 14, 1 Corinthians 11) • Food is to hunger, as Jesus is to sin

  21. Doxology Yours is the kingdom, the glory, and the power forever: • God’s permanent kingdom reign (Kingdom) • God’s holy glory in contrast with our sin (Righteousness) • God’s powerful ability to provide for all of our needs (All These Things)
