  1. Unit Test Activity 71-84 Brookville Intermediate School 8th Grade Science

  2. Answer each question thoroughly and completely. USE COMPLETE SENTENCES!!

  3. How do the Sun’s position in the sky and the length of daylight relate to the seasons of the year? Explain. (+2 pts) The sun is highest in the sky and the daylight is longest at the beginning of summer. The sun is lowest in the sky and the daylight is shortest during winter.

  4. What is the relationship between the length of daylight and the Sun’s angle? Explain. (+2 pts) They change together. Both increase from January to their highest level on June 2 then drop to their lowest level on December 21. This pattern repeats each year.

  5. Why is the Northern Hemisphere warmer when it is tilted toward the Sun? (+2 pts) The Northern Hemisphere is warmer when it is tilted towards the Sun because is getting more direct rays from the Sun.

  6. Using a Venn diagram compare and contrast rotation and revolution. (+6 pts) Label each circle of the Venn diagram Rotation- causes day/night, spins around an axis, 24 hours long Revolution- causes year, Earth moves around the Sun, 365.25 days long Both- movements of Earth, defines a period of time, counter-clockwise

  7. Axis- An imaginary line about which a body rotates. • Revolve- To move around another body. • Revolution- The orbiting of one body around another. • Rotate- To turn on its axis.

  8. Crescent Moon- The phase of the moon when less than ½ of the moon is lit up. • Full Moon- The moon when it looks like it is completely lit up. • First Quarter Moon- The phase of the moon when the right ½ is lit up and the left ½ is dark.

  9. Gibbous Moon- The moon phase where more than ½ the moon is lit up. • Last Quarter Moon- The phase of the moon when the left ½ is lit up and the right ½ is dark. • Lunar Cycle- The cycle of moon phases. • New Moon- The moon when it is totally dark and not visible.

  10. Waning- Decreasing the illuminated portion of the moon. • Waxing- When the left side of the moon is getting dark and the light part is growing; moving towards a full moon. • Model- A representation, general miniature, to show construction or comparison.

  11. Observation- A description of an object or event using your five senses; can be qualitative or quantitative descriptions. • Orbit- A curved path of one object around another. • Advantage- Any state of circumstance that is favorable for success or desired outcome.

  12. Disadvantage- An Absence of advantage or equality. • High tide- The time of the day when the water level reaches the highest point. • Low tide- The time of the day when the water level is the lowest. • Moon phase- The illuminated portion of the moon as seen by Earth.

  13. Tides- The regular rising and falling of the ocean surface. • Leap year- A year that contains 366 days, with February 29 as an additional day. • Solar year- A calendar that is closely linked to the changing light from the sun. • Data- Facts, information or statistics.

  14. Observe- To use your five sensed to describe an event or object. • Phenomenon- An event or something that happens in the natural world or universe. • Reproducible- Another scientist could follow your procedure to do the same investigation and obtain similar results.

  15. Plausible- An idea that makes sense in terms of observations and is consistent with other ideas. • Rotation- A turn around its axis. • Time Zone- One of the twenty-four hour regions of the globe approximately coinciding with meridians. • Hemisphere- Half of a sphere.

  16. Angle- The measurement between two line segments that meet at a vertex. • Equator- A circle dividing a sphere into two equal parts.
