  1. Paul Revere’s Rideby: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow “Paul Revere’s Ride” is a narrative poem, which is a poem that tells a story. Like a short story, a narrative poem has the following elements: Plot, setting, conflict and characters.

Historical Fiction • “Paul Revere’s Ride” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow also falls under the category of historical fiction because it is a narrative poem and tells a story. • Historical Fiction – tells a story that is set in the past. The setting is usually real and often contains actual historical persons, but the main character tends to be fictional.

  3. When does truth become legend? • George Washington was an amazing leader, but did he really never, ever lie? Highly regarded famous people sometimes become legends. Stories are passed down about them and those stories are exaggerated. “Paul Revere’s Ride” is an example of a famous highly regarded person whose story is exaggerated.   4. Background to the Poem • By 1775, many American colonists had begun to rebel against the British government’s interference in their affairs. On the night of April 18, British troops left Boston, heading to Concord to arrest the rebel leaders and seize their weapons stockpile. Hoping to warn the rebel leaders of the British advance, Paul Revere, along with William Dawes and Dr. Samuel Prescott, set off on a ride that would make Revere a legend.
