  2. Yearly university content calendar • What is it? A campus-wide calendar of activities, initiatives and key events during specific times a year. • Goal: To plan and integrate communication efforts between Strategic Communications and other campus communicators. • Why? If we plan ahead and coordinate together, we can more effectively tell the WSU story to support WSU’s mission, vision and strategic enrollment efforts.

  3. How will the calendar be used? To create content such as the following: • Written feature stories on department website or WSU News website • Video stories on department website and social media • Photos on department website and social media • Social media takeovers on department social media or official WSU account • News releases to media • Shocker Blast and WSU Today

  4. Why do we need your help? • We try, but Strategic Communications can’t do it all. • You know your department’s story best. • There are resources for you: • Interviewing tips (coming up next) • WSU writing style guide, social media guidelines, design templates, web guides – www.wichita.edu/sc • Need help writing or editing? lainie.mazzullo@wichita.edu

Calendar draft Scholarships – January/February and October/November • These dates line up with when students are applying for scholarships • Content about past scholarship winners and where they are today. Applications – June/July • These dates line up with when students are applying for college • Content about applied learning, recent grad successes, first-generation successes

  6. Calendar draft… Shocker Experience – July, August, October, November and January • These dates line up with when students apply to WSU, the beginning of the semesters and the scholarship season • Content highlighting events, clubs, Greek Life, athletics and other fun things about being a Shocker; services and programs aimed at helping with student retention

  7. Calendar draft… Student services – August, November, April, January • These dates line up with the beginning of the semesters and then when students are registering for classes • Content that highlight student support services and programs that would help them succeed and keep going

Calendar draft… Student successes – February, April, May, September, November, December • These dates line up with the end of each semester and when students enroll at WSU • Content highlighting student success stories and recent grad success stories; student impact stories from Student Involvement (September, February and April)

Calendar draft… Student research and innovation competitions – March, April, May, October, November, December • These dates line up when the following competitions/events are happening • Graduate Research and Scholarly Research (GRASP) (April) • Undergraduate Research and Creativity Forum (URCAF) (April) • Three Minute Thesis (3MT) (November)

  10. Calendar draft… • Koch Innovation Challenge (November and May) • Shocker New Venture Competition (March-April) • E-Launch (October-December) • LaunchPrep (May) • Content highlighting the above events, current projects/innovations, past successes.

Calendar draft… New programs/majors – June and July • These dates line up with when students have to choose a major • Content highlighting new and popular programs/majors and student success stories New and popular facultyand staff – June, July and May • These dates line up with when students are choosing Wichita State and when students are graduating • Content highlighting new and popular professors and staff to introduce them to WSU/let students rave about their favorite people on campus

  12. Interviewing skills • Be prepared – do your homework. • Be professional, on time and respectful of their time. • Observe your surroundings. • A list of questions is helpful, but be ready to take the interview in a different direction.

  13. Interviewing skills… • Use silence to allow people to add more information. • Don’t be afraid to ask them to explain again or explain in simple terms. • Close the interview by asking “What am I missing?” or “What question should I be asking?”
