  3. mobile.istat.it The target The service is open to all citizens However, in realizing it, we have thought in particularto professional and institutional users, that can take actual advantage by accessing to the official dataanytime, anywhere: during a meeting, working or debating on TV… Our idea has been to plan a mobile web site that makes available, in aneasy and quick way, the most important and updated statistics from the Istat web site www.istat.it Dissemination Working Group -16/17 April 2007

  4. mobile.istat.it Contents and functionalities The site has been created to allow quick and easy connection and browsing, using the latest mobile devices, of selected databases containing the most important and popular data currently available from the Istat web site www.istat.it Dissemination Working Group -16/17 April 2007

  5. mobile.istat.it Technical requirements • The site has been made with Markup language XHTML Mobile Profile, • according to W3C and OMA standards • Reflective programming languages like PHP and Microsoft .Net • Web Services Php (only in some cases) • Software ht://Dig (for the search engine) • Contents updating directly from the Istat web site www.istat.it Let’s have a look in detail at some aspects related to the XHTML language Dissemination Working Group -16/17 April 2007

  6. mobile.istat.it Technical requirements XHTML XHTML is the new W3C standard, an HTML remake (see Extensible HyperText Markup Language). This language, based on XML, will soon replace HTML. XHTML Base XHTML Basic document type includes minimal set of modules required to be an XHTML host language document type. In addition it includes images, forms, basic tables, and object support. It is designed for Web clients that do not support the full set of XHTML features, such as mobile phones, PDAs, pagers, and set top boxes. XHTML Base is replacing WML as the language use for WAP applications and is designed as a common base that may be extended. The goal of XHTML Basic is to serve as a common language supported by various kinds of user agents. XHTML MP XHTML Mobile Profile (XHTML MP) is a hypertextualcomputer language standard designed specifically for mobile phones and other resource-constrained devices. It is an XHTML document type defined by the Open Mobile Alliance. XHTML-MP is derived from XHTML 1.1 Basic Profile by adding XHTML Modules. However, for certain modules, XHTML-MP does not mandate a complete implementation so a XHTML-MP browser may not be fully conforming on all modules. Dissemination Working Group -16/17 April 2007

  7. mobile.istat.it Data presentation: the layout The description of all variables and data released by this site has been adapted to the peculiarities of a good communication for mobiles: the form of the presentation is very compact but exhaustive. Navigation: the number of labels and the sequence of content levels have been optimized, limiting as much as possible the use of long words and periods. The design of the site is very simple and adapted to the devices, like mobiles, with little display and little keyboard. A search engine analyzes the site contents and returns, through a partial word recognition, a series of links addressed to the needed information. Dissemination Working Group -16/17 April 2007

  8. mobile.istat.it Access to the site Valuing the access to the site, it is important to underline that it’s still in an experimental phase: it is not very popular at the moment. The number of users is limited by the high cost of the telephone services. (See the access to mobile.istat.it on March 2007) Dissemination Working Group -16/17 April 2007

  9. mobile.istat.it Communication campaign • The aim: to promote the use of mobile.istat.it as a dynamical aspect of Istat, that releases new and innovative services to the public. • Actions: • Mini - Advertising Campaign • With the aim of reaching professional users, using few economical resources, Istat publicized the site for mobiles, on February 2007, only on the economical newspaper il Sole24oreand on the economical inserts of the two main national newspapers the Corriere della Sera and the La Repubblica. • Recently an announcement was published on the Giornale del Sistan and on English24, the insert of ilSole24ore for professional readers. • To stimulate the press • In February 2007 Istat Press office sent a press release dedicated to mobile.istat.it to news papers and to the national press agencies Ansa, AdnKronos, Asca. • Mailing • A Leaflet to be sent to the subscribers to Istat publications and to a mailing list of big enterprises • To Institutions: • A letter by Istat President Luigi Biggeri to the Parliamentary Members that illustrates the new service. • A scientific poster to be displayed in Universities (social statistical and economical faculties). • Exhibitions • A corner dedicated to mobile.istat.it at the Istat stand at Forum della Pubblica Amministrazione (21-25 may 2007), giving visibility to a public service well integrated with the themes of Forum 2007.
