Çöp(m)adam, established in August 2008 by Tara Hopkins and Melih Özsöz, is a “local development” project aiming to empower women who have never earned a salary in their lives and improve their living standards, through a creative, different and fun way. • Çöp(m)adam, mainly sponsored by Unilever Turkey and other companies of the Turkish industry continues to work in 2 workshops in Turkey (Ayvalik and Diyarbakir); by using post-industrial waste donated. • In its 5th year, çöp(m)adam, as a model for “local suistanable development” succeded to; • employ more than 450 women in Turkey; • worked with leather, felt, glass, billboard, fabric trash; • recycled around 2 tonnes of waste coming from its sponsors; • sold more than 10.000 products (wrapper bags) in 35 different sale points (in Turkey and abroad); • being widely recognized nationally and internationally especialy on the domains of social entrepreneurship, women empowerment and green business.

OUR IMPACT After working here for a couple of months and supporting my unemployed husband and new baby, I went home and told my husband that if I could find a job making things out of trash, he should be able to find work doing something! - GarbageLadyC. This work is a blessing. I am learning something creative instead of sitting in front of the television at home. I am earning money. And I get to spend time away from my crabby mother-in-law. – GarbageLadyT. My husband left me for another woman when my children were younger. Six months ago, he came and wanted me to take him back. It was easy to refuse his request. I have a job. I’m taking care of myself. – GarbageLadyL.
