  2. Hitler’s Rise to Power By 1933, Hitler had created a fascist police state in Germany. Defying the Treaty of Versailles, he built a huge and powerful military force.

  3. Said Hitler, “We must hold unflinchingly to our aim . . . To secure for the German people the land and soil to which they are entitled . . .” He then began to take land for his Third Reich . . .

  4. II. Hitler’s Aggression Hitler played the allies for 3 years, grabbing new land and then telling world leaders he would stop: 1. Germany Remilitarized the Rhineland (the area between France and Germany) (1936)

  9. Allied Response • The Allies APPEASED (gave in to) Hitler. • England, France, Germany and Italy signed the MUNICH PACT (Czechoslovakia not invited) • Thisallowed Hitler to take over the Sudetenland territory if he agreed to stop his aggression

  10. Nazi – Soviet Nonagression Pact The USSR & Germany sign a Non-aggression Pact. • Secretly, they plotted to split Poland between them.

  12. Hitler’s Aggression Continues 4. Germany attacks Poland from the west; the USSR attacks Poland from the east.

  13. Blitzkrieg! “Lightening War” Warfare in which surprise air attacks are quickly followed by huge land attacks. Germany used this on Poland, which fell quickly.

  18. I. The War in North Africa

  19. June 10th, 1940, Italy declared war against Britain and France. The British controlled Egypt and the Suez Canal. With the help of Italy’s Mussolini, the Germans controlled most of North Africa by April of 1940.

  21. II. THE WAR IN WESTERN EUROPE…

  22. By 1940: Hitler had taken over hekka countries! (=a lot) Austria, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Denmark, Belgium, Holland, and even France! (Charles de Gualle, leader of France, escaped to Britain to continue fighting)

  23. In May of 1940 the Nazis invade France. Germans occupy all of Northern France. Nazis set up a “puppet” government in Southern France (under French Marshal Henri Petain) called the “Vichy Government”

  24. Only Great Britain stands against Hitler.

  25. The Battle of Britain: An air battle began as Hitler bombed British cities in an attempt to knock them out of the war. This lasted many months.
