  5. It is the first “global war” • Over 30 countries declare war; more involved indirectly.

  6. It is the first “total war” • Nearly all aspects of life are affected for all citizens—not just soldiers and members of government. • Governments take over economy and use propagandato persuade citizens to support war. • What is propaganda?

  7. It is the first “modern war” • Use of new technology such as airplanes, zeppelins, machine guns, armored tanks, poison gas; and trench warfare on a larger scale.
