Graduation Requirements • 24 total credits earned during grades 9-12 in the following areas: • 3 Science classes • 4 Social Studies, English, and Math classes • 2 Health/Wellness classes (grades 9 and 10) • 4 Physical Education classes (NJROTC exempt in grades 9 & 12) • 1 World Language course • Electives highlighting your areas of interest • Successful completion of the Career Portfolio or BCTC project (CEW Standards) • Satisfactory completion of EOCAs
Career Portfolio as a Graduation Requirementand a State Requirement Background: To help ensure that all students in Pennsylvania are on track for meaningful postsecondary engagement and success, the Department of Education has included a measure of students’ career exploration, preparation, and readiness as part of Pennsylvania’s state and federal accountability system through the Future Ready PA Index and under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Translated for you: All students in grades K-12 are required to proficiently satisfy career activities and assignments yearly. You must complete your portfolio activities in order to graduate.
Standards for Career Education and Work (CEW Standards) Career portfolio activities (K-12) must address standards in the following areas: • Career Awareness and Preparation • Career Acquisition (Getting a Job) • Career Retention and Advancement (How to Keep a Job and Get Ahead) • Entrepreneurship The CEW standards complement all subjects/disciplines and other academic standards by identifying skills and competencies needed to become “career ready”.
Career Portfolio – non BCTC students • We have switched from Career Cruising to Smart Futures • Students participate in activities each year that meet the CEW Standards and satisfy this graduation requirement • All information can be found on our updated website • Academics/Career Portfolio/10th Grade Information • This is updated frequently!
Career Portfolio – BCTC students • BCTC students fulfill their state standards/this graduation requirement within their BCTC program. However, there are still a few elements of our Career Portfolio that are required. • Students should also be sure that they were current at the end of last year and will upload those activities to their Smart Futures accounts later in the year.
What Should I Be Doing This Year? • Self-Assessment: evaluate and analyze your interests, strengths, and abilities. • Research: start to look at the post-secondary options of interest to you: two-year college, four-year college, military, technical school. • Get involved: make yourself marketable to an employer or admission’s office. • Select and do well in a rigorous curriculum. • Develop a strong positive relationship with your teachers, counselor, and administrator. You will probably need a letter of recommendation/reference some day.
Testing • PreACT-Practice ACT. All sophomores are given this as a practice assessment. • PSAT-Practice SAT. All juniors are given this as a practice assessment. • ACT-Sign up for this assessment at actstudent.org at any point during your junior or senior year. You must do this on your own time. • SAT-Sign up for this assessment at collegeboard.org after you have received your detailed PSAT score report (in Dec/Jan of your junior year). You must do this on your own time. We will be a test center in March for this assessment.
Testing, cont’d. • NOCTI-exams given to our CTC students at BCTC. • ASVAB – an interest inventory that any student in 9th, 10th or 11th grade can take. This assessment is given here at BASH twice this year – Nov. 25th and in early-Spring. The permission slips went out to all students on October 2nd and students have until October 31st to return them to the Counseling Office if they’d like to participate.
Communication is key • No matter what your questions or concern, our department is here to help. • Email is often the best and quickest way to get ahold of your School Counselor. It is also the biggest way we communicate with your child. Students should be checking their school emails daily! • All announcements are posted under the School Counseling page, put in Dr. Foley’s Week in Review and shared with students via email, daily announcements and TV News. • But please, if you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us!
