  1. The Battle of Jericho Chasity Davis By: Sharon M. Draper Athenaeum Books for Young Readers June 01,2003

  2. Jericho’s First Encounter • The setting of the story mostly takes place at Douglass High school. • Jericho wants to pledge in the Warriors of Distinction which is a school club. • He also plays the trumpet. • Jericho meets the girl he believes could be the one for him.

  3. Character’s • Jericho is a sixteen-year-old African American teenager; he is the protagonist of the book. Jericho loves to play the trumpet and just feels the need to be a part of something bigger than him. The Warriors of Distinction could be his ticket to that big something he dreams of. Jericho’s mother lives in Alaska. He lives with his father and step mother Geneva and two step brothers Todd and Rory . • Josh is Jericho’s cousin. Jericho and Josh have been by each other’s sides since birth. • November is Josh’s girlfriend. • Dana is Novembers best friend. Dana’s father is a pilot and has always wanted a little boy but has a daughter instead so Dana has always been tough and able to carry her own load.

  4. Character’s Cont’d • Kofi is Dana’s boy friend. Kofi and Jericho have been friends for a while. • Arielle is Jericho’s girl friend.

  5. Characters

  6. Conflicts • The warriors of distinction is what many of the boys at Douglass live to be a part of but is the club really worth it? • The club has a code of secrecy no one outside the club knows what's all involved. • Teens run the club but that’s the biggest problem. • Peer pressure is the worst part of the warriors of distinctions club.

  7. Minor Characters • Eric is Jericho’s friend he is paralyzed from a accident that happened when he was eleven. • Mr. Tambori is Jericho’s trumpet teacher. • Uncle Brock is Josh’s dad, and Jericho’s uncle.

  8. Reviews • Reviewer- Noah Piehl • Jericho loves to play trumpet although he has low self a steam because a few extra pounds he seems to have it all together in life. He would love to have a girlfriend but Arielle seems to only show interest because he pledges for the Warriors. The initiation activities of the Warriors don’t seem worth the humiliation. • http://www.teenreads.com/reviews/the-battle-of-jericho

  9. Reviews Cont’d • Jericho ,Josh ,and Kofi want to be part of a group called warriors of distinction. They are asked to participate in a toy drive which reassures them that they are being considered as members. Kofi’s girl friend Dana sneaks into a meeting and demands she be the first female member. • https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/sharon-m-draper/the-battle-of-jericho/#review

  10. My take on the novel • The Battle of Jericho is a great book for teens. A lot of teens are willing to do whatever is necessary to fit in and be excepted in society. Sharon Draper shows in this book that fitting in isn’t worth forgetting who you are as a person and losing all respect.
