  1. Rescue Robots By Syd and Rachel

  2. What are rescue robots? • Rescue robots are a type of new technology commonly used in situations that are unsafe for humans. They help rescue people from natural disasters, such as earthquakes that cause debris and rubble.

  3. When were they invented? • Rescue robots were invented to help rescue people during the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake of 1995 in Japan.

  4. Situations in which to use a rescue robot • Mining accidents • Urban disasters • Hostage situations • Explosions • Gaining access to otherwise unreachable areas in order to rescue people

  5. Gemini-scout mine rescue robot • Withstand explosions • Crawl over boulders • Find its way through 18 inches of water • Navigate through piles of rubble • Can deliver goods to miners trapped underground • Less than 4 feet long and 2 feet tall • Controlled with Xbox 360 controller

  6. Snakebot • Wriggle around corners • Move through tiny gaps • Climb large inclines • Has a camera to help locate disaster victims • 1 inch thin and 26 feet long • Designed last year to help with Japan’s tsunami and earthquake

  7. quince • Camera • CO2 Sensors • Door opener • Speakers • Microphone • Infrared thermography camera • Used after the Japan disaster to locate survivors in hard-to-reach areas • Modified version sent to Fukushima nuclear plant to measure radiation

  8. DASH • Combines the durability of a cockroach and the climbing ability of a gecko • CO2 Detectors to find survivors in a disaster • Very cheap to make • Can detect disasters before they happen • Explore bridges to see if parts are about to collapse • Sensors that detect abnormal vibrations

  9. Goqbot • Fit into small spaces • Moves significantly faster than the Snakebot • Imitates caterpillars ‘ballistic roll’ (Rolling into a ball and propelling itself away from enemies) • Silicone rubber robot • Memory alloy coils allow it to curl into a ‘Q’ shape • Can roll away at over 1 and a half feet per second

  10. smavnet • Swarming Micro Air Vehicle Network • Developed in French Federal Institute of Technology • Tiny, flying robots that move in swarms • Made from plastic foam • Contain lithium ion battery-powered electric motors • Autopilot controls air speed, altitude, and turn rate • Also be used to photograph scenery, to locate people who may need rescuing

  11. facts • Japan is the most advanced country in the field of rescue robotics • The most advanced rescue robot is Quince, which was unveiled in April, 2010 • Fire departments in Tokyo are even using rescue bots, particularly one called RoboCue • RoboCue is mainly for rescuing people from bomb sites • Rescue robots were even used to search for victims and survivors after the September 11 attacks in New York
