IMPORTANT DATES 1164: Relics of the Magi brought to Cologne; old Carolingian cathedral burns down. 1248: Start building choir 1260: Master Gerhard dies; ambulatory and some of the radiating chapels completed 1265: Lower story of the choir and sacristy completed 1269: Transepts and choir completed 1300: Upper choir and buttressing completed 1322: 2 aisles of the nave, 2 stories of the Southern tower completed 1350: South Tower grows and a wooden crane placed on top (continue to build for 200 years) 1560: Construction stops on cathedral 1842: Construction begins again to finish cathedral 1864: Two transept facades and triforium of nave and transept finished, wood roof truss above choir replaced with iron 1880: Both towers finished
