For Clients • The HeLP Clinic provides free civil legal services to • Low income children who are receiving care at Children’s and • Their families • For Students • The HeLP Clinic educates students concerning • Lawyering skills • Professional identity • Substantive law (education, SSI, wills, housing, Medicaid) • Ethics • Interdisciplinary collaboration What is HeLP - Purpose

  4. The HeLP Clinic is interdisciplinary • Law students • Social work students • Physicians in the Atlanta area • Medical students • Masters and PhD students • Former and current Georgia lawyers Who is HeLP-ing?

  5. HeLP Clinic benefits ALL students • Students in Clinic have interests in • Poverty law • Administrative law • Education law • Estate Planning • Housing / Landlord Tenant law • But many students in Clinic • Have NO IDEA what they want to practice! Who is HeLP-ing: Students

HeLP Clinic allows students to engage professionals in both legal and non-legal fields • Consult with doctors and medical students about your client's medical records • Work with social work students on non-legal avenues to help clients • Network with legal professionals in many fields Who is HeLP-ing: Collaboration

  7. The HeLP Clinic is located on the 6th floor of the College of Law • HeLP has offices in all Children’s hospital locations • Egleston • Scottish Rite • Hughes Spalding Where to find HeLP: Offices

HeLP students experience Clinic outside the office as well • Two dinner seminars with students at Morehouse School of Medicine • Patient rounds on the floor with doctors at Hughes Spalding Hospital • Bi-weekly breakfast meetings on campus • House calls for clients as needed Where to find HeLP: Breaking the Mold

  9. HeLP Clinic provides services for low income children treated at Children’s and their families • Clients need HeLP for a variety of reasons • Social Security Matters • Education Matters • Estate Planning Matters • Housing Matters Who needs HeLP?: An Overview

  10. Many HeLP cases focus on Social Security law. • Clients may need HeLP with Social Security for: • Applications • Denials / Hearings • Overpayments • Medicaid Who Needs HeLP: Social Security

  11. In addition to Social Security, many clients need HeLP for other legal matters, including: • Education • IEPs • Therapy needs • Transportation needs • Estate planning • Wills and Trusts • Advance Directives • Financial Powers of Attorney Who Needs HeLP: Other Issues

  14. There are few requirements for HeLP Clinic • Successful completion of 1L classes • Minimum 2.3 GPA • Proper immunizations • Time commitments for the semester • HeLP 1: 98 hours • HeLP 2: 140 hours How You Can HeLP: Requirements

  15. HeLP Clinic is on a “first come, first served” basis for registration • No application for fall / spring semesters • Limited availability • Must make sure there are no class conflicts • Morehouse seminars are Thursday evening How You Can HeLP: Registration
