  4. Access to water gave certain countries more wealth and power. We need water to survive and past successful civilizations such as Mesopotamia, Egypt and the Indus River Valley depended upon this invaluable resource.

  5. How does water protect us? It serves as a natural border against attack.

  7. Outcomes of exploration… Knowledge of the Americas Spread of Disease Institution of African slavery Plants and Animals (horse) Rivalry in America

  8. The Early Explorers Marco Polo: The First Renaissance Explorer Born in Venice Lived in China Brought back goods Introduced the Venetians to paper money Inspired Christopher Columbus

  9. Speaking of Columbus… Grew up in Genoa, Italy Sailed on trading ships Drew and sold maps Queen Isabella thought he was cool and offered him a salary Lucky for him it worked… He brought her cargo He battled storms on his last expedition

  10. Vasco de Gama Sent by King Manual 1 to find a water route to Asia Lands in a rich Muslim city off the east coast of Africa Ends up in securing trade routes to India and takes over land in Africa

  11. John Cabot was in on it, too… Sailed to North America under English flag Hoping to find a short route to Asia Ends up in Nova Scotia, Canada As a result, discovers the Grand Banks

  13. Ferdinand Magellen…he was from Portugal He was a very busy explorer! Proved the world was round Ran five ships A straight was named after him at the Southern tip of South America Thank God for sawdust and rats! He was condemned for his errors in judgement.
