  1. Warm up 8/30/07 • What did you discover from yesterday’s lab? • Find the volume of the object in cm³ and mL 2 cm 5 cm 2 cm

  2. Announcements • If you were absent be sure to check the grey folder in absent work bin to get stuff missed • If you leave anything here, it will be in the work passes back bin • If you bring in pennies before 1982 you will receive a no homework pass. • 1 penny = 5 pt homework pass

  3. The Metric System In science class, we will be using the METRIC SYSTEM.

  4. We use different measurements depending on how big or small and object is- For example, you would use centimeters to measure a coin, and kilometers to measure the distance from San Marcos to Escondido. We can change the standard unit using pre-fixes

  5. The prefixes are (from largest to smallest) • Kilo- K • Hecto- H • Deka- D • Unit- Meter, Liter or Gram • Deci- d • Centi- c • Milli- m

  6. Pre-fixes We can think of the prefixes like a stair step Kilo 1000 Hecto 100 Deka 10 UNIT Liter Meter Gram 1 Deci 1/10 Centi 1/100 Milli 1/1000

  7. To help you remember K H D U D C M King Henry Died Unusually Drinking Chocolate Milk

  8. Converting When you go down the stair to the right, you move the decimal over that many spaces in the same direction. For example: convert 5.5 Dl to cl K H D U D C M 5 5 3 spaces moved to the right, so move decimal point 3 to the right 5,500 cl

  9. Let’s try another Convert .77 cg to kg K H D U D C M 0 0 77 0 0 0 5 spaces to the left, so move decimal point 5 to the left .0000077 kg

  10. Your turn! Convert 25 cm to Dm K H D U D C M 0 2 5 3 spaces to the left, so move decimal point 3 to left ANSWER: .025 Dm

  11. Again, your turn Convert 12.6 km to dm K H D U D C M 4 spaces to right = 126,000 dm 12 6 0 0 0

  12. Kilo Hecto Deka Unit deci centi milli Converting SI Units If you move down the stair step, you move the decimal to the right… 2.6 km = _260,000_ cm 2.6 km = _________ cm If you move up the stair step, you move the decimal to the left 3,700 mm = ______ m 3,700 mm = __3.7__ m

  13. Or you can think of it like a math problem . . .
