  3. Introduction Welcome to New Hope’s first FOCUS (aka Small) Group Leader Training We are here for several purposes including: • Defining what we are doing • Setting expectations • Providing tools, methods and ideas • Creating a community of group leaders for support and encouragement.

  5. Worship Group worship is important to focus eveyone’s attention on Jesus. Do not worry if there are no musicians – use other resources. The key is to spend time together NOT focused on ourselves and ON God. Worship includes PRAYER. Set aside time to pray together – share concerns and praises, but also pray for the church, our community, state, nation, and the world. Select a missionary to pray for – even take time to email the missionary and let them know that your group is praying for them. Resources • Integrity iWorship DVD’s • CD’s • If you group has musicians, let them accompany your worship.

  6. Getting to Know Each Other These activities help people become familiar with each other and are an important component to developing new groups. These activities (aka “icebreakers”) are intended to allow people to comfortably break-down our normal social fears by sharing fun and challenging situations.

  8. Session 1: Why Small Groups Scripture supports our need for Small Groups. God observed: “…It is not good for the man to be alone.” – Genesis 2:18

  9. The Holy Spirit empowers the prayers of the community:  “19Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. 20For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them.” – Matthew 18:19-20

Session 1: Why Small Groups We need encouragement:“24And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. 25Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” – Hebrews 10:24-25 (NIV)

Session 1: Why Small Groups We are one body:“4Just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6We have different gifts, according to the grace given us.” – Romans 12:4-6

  12. Session 1: Why Me? (This session will be conducted as a Small Group study group.) Debrief Bible Study.

Session 2: What is a Small Group? • Definition of a Small Group: a cluster of Christians who meet regularly and function with all the basic marks of the gospel: Community, Nurture, Worship and Mission • Intention of a Small Group: is to stimulate growth in their members (Ephesians 4:15, 16) and to be involved in the mission of Christ (Matthew 28:18-20). Thus the groups becomes cells of the body of Christ.

  14. Session 2: What is a Small Group? Community • Definition: A group of believers sharing life together that exhibits: • Unity in Christ • Shared Experiences • Trust and vulnerability • Accountability and Commitment

  15. Session 2: What is a Small Group? Worship • Definition: Worship is at the heart of our relationship with God, both as individuals and a community. In worship we focus on God: on hearing a message based on the Bible, on prayer, and on the sacraments. In worship we ground our life as a community in a corporate experience of God.

  16. Session 2: What is a Small Group? Nurture • Definition: Our small group community should have a hunger to study God’s word and a willingness to submit to its authority, which leads to the worship to God and obedience to what He commands.

  17. Session 2: What is a Small Group? Mission (aka. Outreach, Evangelism) • Definition: Mission or outreach in a small group context is to work together as a community of believers to reach out to the community with the love of Jesus Christ.

  19. Session 3: How do Small Groups work? Organizational Dynamics: The characteristic behaviors of an organization and its members when subject to various conditions over time. A model, called the Tuckman Stages, define four stages of group development: • Forming • Storming • Norming • Performing

  20. Session 3: How do Small Groups work? For our purposes, we will rename these stages as: • Forming Inclusion • Storming Control • Norming Exertion • Performing Renewal/Conclusion
