  1. 34.Ground Water • EQ: How can we determine the safety and drinkability of our water supplies? • LT: I can describe the processes that can be used to convert unusable water to usable resources. • LT: I will describe groundwater. I will determine which type of soil is most permeable to water. I will explain why groundwater is becoming a non-renewable resource.

  2. Welcome! Warm Up 3/18/14 • What are three properties of the ocean? • 2. What reasons have people studied the ocean? Go to goo.gl/vta7d1 to record your response

  3. Review • Google "Troubling signs in Paradise"    • http://video.msnbc.msn.com/nightly-news/50152559#50152559 • Explain how the tsunami in Japan has affected other ecosystems. • http://www.NBCnews.com

  5. DEMO: Soil TestingSoil Testing Data Table * Look at the sample at your table for the observation sections

  6. Groundwater Notes 23 Groundwater – water that soaks in the ground & collects in rocky pores (pores – space between rocks) Permeable – allows water to flow easily through (ex: sandstone) Impermeable – Doesn’t allow water to move through b/c of small, few or no pores (ex: clay) Aquifer – layer of permeable rock that lets water move freely

  7. NB 23: Groundwater

  8. How does groundwater travel? NB 23 Interconnecting pores How do you replace groundwater? Time and precipitation Why is groundwater becoming a non-renewable resource? We are using it up faster than nature can replace it. (Avg. person use 397 Liters per day) Also pollution

  9. Finish the conclusion questions for the lab

  10. EXIT: • How did you observe permeability in today’s activity? • Use Impermeable in a sentence
