  13. Purpose

  14. Purpose • Think carefully about what you want to study and how you can accomplish your research goals • Communicate your ideas clearly and completely to others so you can receive useful feedback

  15. Elements Title Audience Background Research Question

  16. Framing the Research Question Based on Shishir Mathur’s UrbP 298A lecture

  17. A Good Research Question is: Is the question of interest to you? Relevant Interesting Is the question relevant to the field of planning? Specific Is the question specific enough? (not too vague or broad) Does it lead to generating a clear hypothesis? Feasible Can the question be answered given time and resources available? Do you know what research methods might be needed? Do you have mastery over those methods? Given your time and budget, do you have access to the data or other information you need?

  18. Your Research Question

  19. Elements Title Audience Background Research Question Relevance Hypothesis Methods

  20. Methods Data source Reason for collecting the data Data collection procedures Method of data analysis

  21. Elements Title Audience Background Research Question Relevance Hypothesis Methods Report Outline Bibliography

  22. Bibliography Items cited in the proposal Other relevant items read Items you plan to read

  23. Elements Title Audience Background Research Question Relevance Hypothesis Methods Report Outline Bibliography Schedule

  24. Schedule of Tasks • Library research • Testing and refining methodology • Collecting data • Drafting individual chapters • Preparing two full drafts • Producing the final report

  25. Grading (1) Is the research question well defined and clearly stated? Is the relevance of the research clearly and convincingly explained? (10 sources cited, 4 peer-reviewed) Is the hypothesis clearly and convincingly stated? (5 sources cited, 2 peer-reviewed) Is the methodology appropriate, and explained in detail? Is the report outline detailed and logical?

  26. Grading (2) Does the bibliography demonstrate that sufficient material is available to complete the project? Is the proposed schedule of tasks detailed and feasible? Is the writing grammatically correct and free of typos? Is the writing clear and easy to understand? Are the bibliography and footnotes properly formatted, and are citations included where necessary?
