  1. GEO “Ministerial” Meeting in Cape Town November 2007

  2. What did Argo supply in support of this…. • Three people, Howard Freeland, Steve Piotrowicz and • Mathieu Belbéoch • 2) Contributions to an “Oceans United” exhibit in the exhibition room. • 3) A short article for a volume “The First 100 Steps to GEOSS” • 4) An article for a volume entitled “The Full Picture” which was distributed free to all delegates. • So, how did it go? • Conrad Lautenbacher was very gracious in his opening speech noting the spectacular success that Argo has supplied.

  3. How did it go? “The Full Picture” This coffee-table book was decently prepared, and after some difficulty between us and the editorial board we did get a 5-page article in there. But it was stressful. The proofs we received from them were unacceptable. The final result for Argo is OK, but I do wonder if anyone will ever read it. I suspect most copies were left behind in hotel rooms to save packing them to take home.

  4. How did it go? “The First 100 Steps to GEOSS” This was a listing of what GEO staff believe they have achieved. Argo had a 2-page listing inside it that was very formulaic, I’d been given a list of headings, fill in the blanks. The result was worse than useless. I wonder if the editors looked at any of the pictures. The Argo diagrams were done well enough, but many contributions had enormous reason to complain.

  5. How did it go? “The Oceans-United Exhibit” This was extremely impressive, a very, very good exhibit indeed. It was conceived and managed by Chris Reid who was then the Exec. Director of POGO. He put in a lot of work and then was unable to attend. The display also did have one down side to it. Argo and Jason joined forces to put together a coupled pair of posters that were very impressive and striking.

  6. How did it go? “The Oceans-United Exhibit” The posters were 2 metres tall and meant to show clearly that “these are two tightly linked programs”. If anyone wants the graphics, I can supply pdfs.

  7. How did it go? “The Oceans-United Exhibit”

  8. How did it go? “The Oceans-United Exhibit” The “down side” of the exhibit, notice the lack of visitors….

  9. How did it go? “The Oceans-United Exhibit” conclusions and aftermath • In MY opinion only the GEO meeting was poor. It was mired in process at the expense of substance. • The Oceans United exhibit was brilliantly conceived and the Argo/Jason components executed wonderfully, largely by Scripps staff. • The cost was high, Steve contributed a chunk of money to pay for printing and shipping costs, I contributed $3500 towards exhibit costs, this was high. • Attendance at ALL exhibits was pathetic except for the public day when school children came who were a joy to talk to. • The Oceans United exhibit still exists and is available for use. My feeling is that it is very beautiful, but the costs of setting it up are too high. The first shot at a reprise on the exhibit was last week, was anyone there?
