  3. Adventure Our new unit is about adventure. We will be reading a contemporary novel THE CONTENDER & an ancient work THE ODYSSEY.

  4. Tri-Fold Name Plaques Fold a piece of paper in three vertically. Write your name on 2 sides & tape together into a triangle.

  5. Write one fact about you that no one knows on the index card. • Put your name on the other side. GET TO KNOW YOU . . .

  6. Let’s Learn About How You Learn. Metacognition = the study of thinking & learning Learning Styles = the ways in which we personally learn best and process new information

  7. 6 Basic Styles: • Reading • Writing • Listening • Speaking • Visualizing • Manipulating • Summary: Doing, Seeing, Hearing

  8. Application: • Find tips for your L.S. & write down 2-3.

  12. BREAK IT DOWN! Auto + bio + graph(y) • Auto = self • Bio = life • Graph = write • Define autobiography. • New word: memoir . . . What root do you see that you recognize in this French word?

  13. Characterization • The ways the author creates the persona in the work through his/her words, actions, thoughts, & opinions’ of others • Which method is most reliable? • Which method is least reliable?

  14. Everyone can learn. • A person can be smart and unable to read. • Anyone who cannot read has no future in life. • Anyone who does not go to college has no future. FOUR CORNERS: Take a stand in the corner that fits your opinion. Be able to support with textual examples.

  16. Groups: What L.S.do you think our narrator has? Be able to support your conjectures with evidence from text.

  18. Homework: • Write a letter to me telling me your L.S. & M.I., goals for this class, and anything you want me to know to teach you better.
