  1. AGCF standards and timescales MSAN Industry Experts Group 4 November 2005 Alan Nunn BT Group

  2. ETSI TISPAN work • TISPAN is developing the detailed definitions of the AGCF and its interfaces • in the context of emulating PSTN in an IMS architecture • IMS-based PSTN Emulation Subsystem (PES) • Two relevant work items in TISPAN • 2030 - NGN Functional Architecture PSTN/ISDN Emulation Subsystem; IMS-based functional architecture • 3044 - IMS-based PSTN/ISDN Emulation Call Control Protocol based on Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and Session Description Protocol (SDP)

  3. Standards timetable for TISPAN architecture Two releases • Release 1 - functionality enabling a basic POTS service to be delivered via an embedded “PES subsystem black-box" (PES = PSTN Emulation Subsystem) • Target completion date December 2005 • Pressure from some players to deliver full IMS-based PES in this timescale. • Release 2 - extends this to the point where the interfaces are sufficiently defined to enable a more complete PSTN service to be delivered (PSTN Emulation) • defines the "internal structure" of the PES and splits it up into a "distributed subsystem" • separates PSTN application from AGCF • Target completion date March 2006

  4. Feature constraints • TISPAN mappings between H.248 and SIP have some deficiencies - BT and others (eg France Telecom) working in TISPAN to remove these • Key features not supported in Release 1 • mid-call "flash-hook" / Recall (short break in the loop, typically used for signalling mid-call events – hold, to introduce a 3-way call etc.), followed by a digit collection event • "special" [interrupted] dial tone. (As used to indicate a message is waiting for example) • Ringing cadence for personal calling. (Distinctive Ringing) • Subs Private Metering (either 50Hz or 12/16khz) • 30kohm loop (analogue call divert invocation - old method for Doctors surgeries) • Work in Release 2 to map the first three of these features fully • Service scenarios need to be defined to ensure that the necessary interactions are supported. This is to enable decisions to be made which partition the functionality appropriately between the MSAN, AGCF and SIP Application Server • ISDN services – limited work to date
