  1. MAINTENACE OF FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEM MANISH TIWARI MANAGER, BINA

  2. FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEM Fire Fighting systems used in power grid are • Emulsifier System for Transformer / Reactor • Hydrant System for Transformer / Reactor and Buildings • Fire Extinguishers • Fire alarm system • Fire Buckets

  3. EMULSIFIER SYSTEM • Used to protect Transformers / Reactors from fire • Around Transformer / Reactor, spray line and Fire detection lines are provided • In spray line nozzles are provided for spray on fire • In detection line Quartz bulbs are provided which blows at 79 degree C

  4. EMULSIFIER SYSTEM • Deluge Valve is provided between Main line and detection line • Balance across deluge valve is made in normal conditions which stops water to enter spray line • Whenever fire occurs, Quartz bulb blows and it releases water or air of detection line. This operates deluge valve and High velocity water spray starts

  5. HYDRANT SYSTEM • The Hydrant is a fitting which allows the fireman to connect his hose or standpipe to the water main and also to control the flow of water as he requires • It consists of a short length of flanged pipe connected to water main, a valve and an outlet

  6. HYDRANT SYSTEM • A hose box is provided near hydrant. In hose box branch pipe and hose pipes of required length are provided. • Whenever fire occurs Hose pipe and branch pipe is taken from hose box and connected to hydrant. The valve is opened to extinguish the fire.

  7. FIRE FIGHTING PUMP HOUSE In FFPH Building following system is provided to maintain pressurized water system in pipe line for Hydrant System & HVW spray system: • Diesel Engine • HVW Motor • Jockey Pump • Pressure switches • Air Vessel • Strainers

  8. PRESSURISING FIRE FIGHTING PIPELINE Normal pressure maintained in Fire Fighting Pipe line is 8.0 kg/cm2. Whenever pressure reduces to 6.0 kg /cm2, reduced pressure is sensed by pressure switch which starts jockey pump and after achievement of pressure of 8.0 kg/cm2 it stops automatically. Generally two jockey pumps are provided. One of these works as standby.

  9. PRESSURISING FIRE FIGHTING PIPELINE When fire occurs and hydrant / HVW spray system operates, pressure in pipeline goes below 4.5 kg /cm2, Electrical motor operates and build pressure to keep the pressurized water supply continue. Motor is stopped manually after use of water for extinguishing the fire.

  10. PRESSURISING FIRE FIGHTING PIPELINE • If problem with Electrical motor comes, pressure reduces to 3.5 kg/cm2 and diesel engine starts to make up the supply of water. • Pressure switches are very important as whole operations are dependent upon them. • Strainers are provided to strain foreign material from water.

  11. FIRE EXTINGUISHERS • These are portable fire extinguishing equipments placed in fire prone area for extinguishing small fires, which can become big fire. • These extinguishers may have different type of mediums for different type of fires

  12. FIRE EXTINGUISHERS--TYPE • Water type Extinguishers • Foam Extinguishers • Dry Powder Extinguishers • Carbon dioxide type extinguishers

  13. FIRE EXTINGUISHERS • Water Type: This contains Water and CO2 Cartridge Before operation nozzle blockage is necessary to be checked

  14. FIRE EXTINGUISHERS • Foam type Fire Extinguishers Aluminum sulphate and sodium bi carbonate mixture make CO2 gas and foam which extinguishes the fire

  15. FIRE EXTINGUISHERS • Dry Powder type It uses Sodium bicarbonate or potassium bicarbonate powder in combination with gas cartridges, for fire extinguishing

  16. FIRE EXTINGUISHERS • CO2 type extinguishers CO2 gas in pressurized condition is used to extinguish the fire

  17. FIRE EXTINGUISHER USES

  18. FIRE ALARM SYSTEM In control room, smoke detectors are provided, which senses the fire and give alert alarm for next action taken by persons. Complete system comprises of • Detectors • Fire Alarm Panel • Hooters

  19. SMOKE DETECTORS Mainly three type of smoke detectors are used • Ionization type • Photo-electric type • Heat Type
