  7. Interpreting the Non Verbal Message • Don’t just look, but SEE • Consider the persons normal physical and verbal patterns and be alert for variations from that norm • Remember that one signal alone means nothing; what you’re looking for are clusters of signals

  8. Tone of Voice • Pitch and timbre of a persons voice • Give same words different meanings • Example word… “oh” • How many meanings?

  9. Truth or lie???? Liars typically… • Touch their face when talking • Don’t make eye contact • Become rigid when talking • Mutter or excessive talk instead of making the point.

Non Verbal Workplace Communication • Develop a “Professional Personality” • Don’t smile unless you have a reason • Beware of your head position • Avoid touching anywhere above your own shoulders • Try to be the 1st to interact • Assess yourself • Tune in to your gestures • Identify the things you do when you are tense • Work on your posture • Work on your handshake • Establish good eye contact • Most of all…be yourself
