  3. Uzziah Pride Goes Before Destruction

  4. Grace • He set himself to seek God in the days of Zechariah, who instructedhim in the fear of God... 26:5

  5. Success • He went out and made war against the Philistines and broke through the wall of Gath and the wall of Jabneh and the wall of Ashdod, and he built cities in the territory of Ashdod and elsewhere among the Philistines. 26:6 • The Ammonites paid tribute to Uzziah… 26:8 • Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem… 26:9 • And he… cut out many cisterns… 26:10

  6. Success • Under their command was an army of 307,500, who could make war with mighty power… 26:13 • In Jerusalem he made engines, invented by skillful men, to be on the towers and the corners, to shoot arrows and great stones. 26:15

  7. Forgetfulness • …as long as he sought the LORD, God made him prosper. 26:5 • God helped him against the Philistines… 26:7 • And his fame spread far, for he was marvelously helped… 26:15 • But when he was strong, he grew proud… 26:16

  8. Sin • For he was unfaithful to the LORD his God and entered the temple of the LORD to burn incense on the altar of incense. 26:16

  9. More grace • But Azariah the priest went in after him, with eighty priests of the LORD who were men of valor, and they withstood King Uzziah… 26:17-18

  10. Stubbornness • Then Uzziah was angry. 26:19 • Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you; reprove a wise man, and he will love you. Proverbs 9:8 • Pride only breeds quarrels, but wisdom is found in those who takeadvice. Proverbs 13:10 (NIV) • The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 1:7

  11. Still more grace • …when he became angry with the priests, leprosy broke out on his forehead in the presence of the priests in the house of the LORD, by the altar of incense. 26:19 • And they rushed him out quickly, and he himself hurried to go out, because the LORDhad struck him. 26:20

  12. Hypocrisy has consequences! • King Uzziah was a leper to the day of his death, and being a leper lived in a separate house, for he was excluded from the house of the LORD. 26:21 • …they buried him with his fathers in the burial field that belonged to the kings, for they said, “He is a leper.” 26:23
