  1. WP4: African Emissions M. Van Roozendael, C. Fayt, C. Hermans, G. Pinardi, C. Gielen, F. Hendrick, I. De Smedt BIRA-IASB Prof. Pierre Nzohabonayo, Rachel Akimana, EugèneNzendako Université du Burundi AGACC-II Third Progress Meeting, BIRA-IASB, 18 Dec. 2013

  2. AGACC-II Tasks in WP 4 • WP4:African emissions • 4.1. Install MAXDOAS instrument in Burundi (Bujumbura) • 4.2.Analyse the data for trace gases (NO2, O3, HCHO, glyoxal, SO2, BrO, H2O) and aerosols • 4.3. Study transport of biomass burning plumes, and link with measurements at Reunion Island AGACC-II Third Progress Meeting, BIRA-IASB, 18 Dec. 2013

  3. OMI/AURA HCHO, 2007-2009, 01:30 pm DJF MAM SON JJA

  4. Activities in 2013 Bujumbura (3°S, 30°E) • Training of EugèneNzendako (until Feb. 2013) • Finalisation and initial calibration of MAXDOAS instrument (until late April 2013) • Participation to MADCAT international campaign in Mainz (Germany) for testing and validation of MAXDOAS system (June 2013) • Fixing of instrumental problem (Jul-Sep 2013) • Final calibration, organisation of transfer to Bujumbura (Oct 2013) • Installation: Nov 2013 AGACC-II Third Progress Meeting, BIRA-IASB, 18 Dec. 2013

  5. Project status 1 year ago (AGACC-II PM2) MAXDOAS • Visit of M. Van Roozendael and C. Hermans in May 2012  identification of suitable location for installation and discussion of critical issues regarding operation and maintenance of instrument • Supporting infrastructure in preparation (security, power, internet connection, etc). A dedicated room is being build to host the instrument. • Training of local people  ongoing at BIRA (Eugène) AGACC II Kick-off Meeting, BIRA-IASB, 29 Sep. 2011

  6. Installation of MAXDOAS and CIMEL systems CIMEL • MAXDOAS and CIMEL sunphotometer installed at University of Bujumbura in November 2013 • Bothsystemsoperationalsince 25 Nov 2013 • Daily data transferusingdedicated internet line (but still part of University network) MAXDOAS room BIRA AGACC-II Third Progress Meeting, BIRA-IASB, 18 Dec. 2013

  7. Functionaldrawing of the Bujumbura installation AGACC-II Third Progress Meeting, BIRA-IASB, 18 Dec. 2013 C. Fayt, 2013

  8. Data acquisition, transfer and processing • Sequences of measurements fully automated • Control of the different devices (sun tracker, filter wheel, CCD) • Sequence of measurements (different elevation angles, dark currents) • Automatic adjustment of the integration time • Remote control possible in case a problem is detected (VNC) • Data are downloaded daily by ftp and raw data are stored at BIRA for further processing • Automated processing chain operational • Rapid control of the quality of the results through a local web page AGACC-II Third Progress Meeting, BIRA-IASB, 18 Dec. 2013

  9. First results – spectral fits  The instrument performs nominally. NO2, HCHO, O3, H2O, O4 … spectral signatures are detected with high S/N ratio according to specifications. AGACC-II Third Progress Meeting, BIRA-IASB, 18 Dec. 2013

  10. First results – slantcolumns Thick clouds & rain HCHO NO2 O4  The instrument performs nominally. NO2, HCHO, O3, H2O, O4 … spectral signatures are detected with high S/N ratio according to specifications. AGACC-II Third Progress Meeting, BIRA-IASB, 18 Dec. 2013

  11. First inversions for NO2, HCHO and aerosols Preliminary – no cloud filtering applied yet AGACC-II Third Progress Meeting, BIRA-IASB, 18 Dec. 2013

  12. Comparisonwith satellite data (HCHO) OMI HCHO VCD • HCHO columns roughly consistent for GOME-2 (09:30 am) and OMI (01:30)  no diurnal variation? • Inter-sensor consistency seems to degrade with time? • Small but significant seasonal variation • What can we learn from MAXDOAS? DJF 2007-2009 AGACC-II Third Progress Meeting, BIRA-IASB, 18 Dec. 2013

  13. Comparisonwith satellite data (HCHO) AGACC-II Third Progress Meeting, BIRA-IASB, 18 Dec. 2013

  14. Comparisonwith satellite data (HCHO) MAXDOAS profiles Model profiles used in satellite retrievals AGACC-II Third Progress Meeting, BIRA-IASB, 18 Dec. 2013

  15. Comparisonwith satellite data (HCHO) AGACC-II Third Progress Meeting, BIRA-IASB, 18 Dec. 2013

  16. Comparisonwith satellite data (HCHO) AGACC-II Third Progress Meeting, BIRA-IASB, 18 Dec. 2013

  17. Outlook • Continued data acquisition and processing of MAXDOAS and CIMEL sunphotometer data throughout 2014 (and later) • Continued data exploitation for NO2, HCHO, glyoxal, O3, BrO, aerosols • Satellite validation • Dispersion modelling • Look for PhD support for a scientist in Bujumbura Thank you to all our colleagues from the University of Burundi !
